I was at the north dam about a half houror so and noticed some thick jet black stuff coming out fat out of that culvert on the moorhead side. Have any of you seen this happen before? If so what is it? Just wondering it looked pretty nasty.

Actually if you go look closer, that black water is not black at all, it is crystal clear clean water.

The culvert feeding in from the MN side just below the rapids is a fresh water return drain from the purification system of the water plant. It is often thought to look black because it feeds into the normal brown muddy waters of the Red.

If you fill a glass with it the water will be clear, kinda a illusion from a distance. Many people have been fooled by this the first time they see it.

That area is a popular haunt for pike because it is clear and cool water, especially during the heat of summer.

I am glad your keeping your eyes peeled for potential problems, that shows stewardship, we all need to do that.
