Only given 3 cranks for the Red

Recommended Posts

Ed and others,

If you only could bring three cranks for fishing the Red down on our end, what would they be? Brand, size, etc.
Also, what three patterns are the go-to's in the fall?

P.S. Ed, sounds like you're fishing with Darren on Wed. Good luck and give him lots of crap- my buddies always do!

Cool, thanks.

Been able to catch frogs over the past few days? I've been out twice and have seen 4 frogs total. It's been really windy, so that hasn't helped.

No, I'm not jealous. However, I noticed that you and your "Bro" went fishing at Orwell a couple of times. I'm sorry I didn't get your message I'm sure you left on my machine. I may have been able to meet you there. After all, it's close for me to go there.

Hmmmm.

Dear Jealous Weasel,

I'm thinking about going there early next week. I gots hot tip! Interested/able to join us? Maybe you could even bring your canoe? It would be tough for you on a week day, I'd imagine.
I'm also hoping to fish Big D one more time this year too. Maybe you could swing that after practice some night?

To answer some of the questions before. Football is going well and so is school. Great kids for both. Football, we're 4-0 so off to a good start. Schedule doesn't get easy, though. We play in Glyndon on Friday night, if interested.
Kids, wife, and dog are doing well. Dog is learning how fun it is to retrieve and is starting to use her nose well. I'm excited about hunting birds again.

As far as fishing during the week: Thursday nights are usually best, because it's pre game night and we are usually done by 5:00 or so. That's about the best I can do. Best time of the year to fish, so I try to get out when I can. I plan on fishing tomorrow night- Thursday. Any plans?

I'm stuck in town every Thurs. until about 7:00 so anything other than river or night fishing is out for me.

Scoot,
Do you work for a living? Are you a guide on the Red River? How is that you seem to be always fishing? Are you married? Do you have kids or other family members?

Signed,
Just Wondering in Ottertail County

Dear Mr. Catfish,

Bite me.

How's school going for you? How about football? How's your lovely bride and kids? I haven't heard from you for a while.
FYI- I'll probably be up at the Rainy for one of the first two weekends in Nov. Interested? It'll be over gun season so if you're planning to do that you'll probably be out. Also, I've heard how you shoot- so you better plan on using all the days provided for your season.
Just for the record, I've fished less this summer than any summer of my life (at least since I was in diapers). However, I'm trying desperately to make up for it by hitting the river for an hour or two a couple of nights a week. Is it just me or do you sound a little jealous?

Scoot my report on how last night went is S...L...O...W.

You friend and I fished tell 1 AM and the walleye were doing a very good job of avoiding us. The only fish we caught were goldeye, a drum and 2 or 3 piglett cats.

The company was good and I enjoyed meeting and fishing with him. We will be on the same waters this weekend too Eh. wink.gif

Water is very low, chunked out a NEW prop on a thumper, can't believe that chunked so darn easy! Really liked that new prop too, great power and smooth, way too brittle though, by the looks of it today. Bummer!

So I get to put my old reliable spare prop back on (that has 3 different blade pitches to it) tell I get the others back from the welding shop, again.

Who ever said you get rich guiding NEVER did much night fishing on rivers, this I am sure of!

wink.gif

Scoot that offer still holds if you can make it.

I wish I could take you up on the offer, but I'm a definite no-go.
I plan on trying those two spots you told me about by your place tonight. Maybe I'll bump into ya.

Well you didn't miss too much on this trip Scoot, it was a slow bite. We had fun but the fishing could have been much better.

It will get better soon, the weather was too nice and the wind switched from N to S, bad deal.

I got the same report from my buddies. Sounds like everyone they spoke with struggled too. Good Thurs, bad after that.
I wish I could give you a report on how things have been going on this end, but no such luck. I haven't been out in a week or so. I hope to go out on Wed. night- if you're bored and looking for a fishing partner, keep that in mind.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
