I am thinking of going up the weekend of the 20-22 (Feb). It seems as though fishing is pretty slow around pine. I have heard of Knights and Bridges before but I have never fished up there. Does anyone have GPS coordinates or do you know where I can buy a map with them on it. Also, how far is it out there. I understand snow is very deep. We would have a sled. DO 4-wheelers work or is it too deep for them too. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Lets go, get some help here for your fishing brotha from anotha motha. My freezer is empty, no walleye left.

A Mapsource fishing hot spot CD from Garman would be a good place to start. It shows a few of the main humps out there. There are dozens of humps out in that neck of the woods. The best way to find them is in the summer driving your boat around that country. There are little humps and bumps all over the place.
You will need to go on sled for sure. A wheeler would never make it.
Your closest access would be Long point, at around 10miles or so. From Baudette it would be more like 18-20. There is a trail from Baudette up that way though (ballard trail)

Thanks for the info widetrack.

Widetrack: Doesn't the Bomber trail that the Sportsman's uses to get out to Oak and their other Resort go by there too. Since they bought Bonnie Brey resort, they have a bomber service from their main base on the river to Oak. That may be the best way to get there, at least there's traffic going by....Kaz

Kaz:
I think were talking about the same trail, if you look on the winter lake trail map, it is called the Ballard trail. It runs right by Knights and Bridges. I've never taken it myself, but It should be staked the whole way.
I've always went cross country from Buffalo, and it gets to be a long ride from there.

Widetrack: Yup, I think it's propably the same. I haven't seen that map, but I didn't think Ballard's ran out that far and can't figure out how they got a trail named after them...I know that Sportsman's started going to Oak this year with a couple of new track vans. I saw them last fall when I was up and they really look impressive. I know that there is lots of structure out there as I ran aground last fall when the water was so low. Hope with all of the moisture this winter the lake can come up two or three feet. The Gap was really bad last summer. I saw a Charter get hung up just south of the Gap. They had to unload and get towed off the bar. With a strong south wind, it sucked all the water north and left parts of 4 mile bay only with a foot or two of depth....Hope for more water....Kaz

Kaz:
There is a lot of snow this year, so lets hope the lake comes back up.
The Angle was a little on the scary side last year too.

Thanks for the info guys. I can call the Sportsman's and ask them. Has anybody fished out there? Have they been catching any fish? About how far out is it from Pine?

It would be about 14-15 miles from Pine island to Knight island.
I haven't been there yet this year, but I go that way in late Feb - March as often as I can. It's the most fun when it's nice outside, and you can run-n-gun, as there is a lot of spots to give a try.

I have never been up there so any advice would be appreciated. Are they reefs or what are they? Do you fish on the hump or off the sides? How deep is it? If anybody has been out there is it tough because of any ice heaves or something ( I realize that changes daily). Thanks for the info.

I'd really like to try it around Bridges and Knight Islands. Any info on water depths, what island, what side of the island, a GPS coordinate, or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are a few well known reefs and quite a few lesser known 'secret' type spots up there, some closer to one island or the other. There are reefs that come up very close to the surface, and reefs that come up out of 30+ fow and top out at 18-20 foot or so, some deeper, some shallower. deepwater is very close to a number [most] of these reefs.
Folks are pretty tightlipped when it comes to the X's and Y's to some of these lesser known spots. If you do a search you will find coordinates for the 18 foot nob 1 mile WSW of Knight, and also the 12 footer [aka 9 footer] near the 3 sisters as well. I have some waypoints I would never post on the web, and I'm quite possesive of these even in person. 'Yellowsubmerine' and I fished last summer in his boat 3 days, I felt obliged to share in this instance and he got the coodinates for one honey hole up there I named "lunker", but he still had to take a blood oath of secrecy! Another top secret waypoint up there I named "Wifes hole", she always gets big fish off this one hence the name! I make folks wear a blind fold when going to this one!
You guys just got to understand that we like to share, but can't just spoonfeed spots/coordinates. Post waypoints on the web and it's not just the guy with the question that see's it, it's there for the entire WWW to see then.
You will enjoy it up there.
Regards....Fisky

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
