Ice Fishing on the Red River

I have been thinking of trying to catch some walleyes ice fishing on the Red in the Fargo area. I was wondering if it would work to use a tip up with the curerent? I had thought of using a three way rig with a heavy weight to hold the line in place and then use a floating jig head tipped with a minnow about 12 inches up from the 4 ounce bell sinker dropper weight from the three way swivel. Has anyone tried this? Thanks for any suggestions. Bruce

Hi Bruce

I have used the 3-way drop for tip-up's on the river with not much success in heavy current. If you were on a deep hole that held sauger it may work? But for walleye look to areas that has less current than the average run.

Seek off current breaks near deep bends an concentrate on the exact base of the drop into the channel, very tight to the transition is best.

I have heard the Cheyenne River is doing well, have you heard anything?
