Making my first trip to LOTW on Feb 20 thru 22 with my 4 sons, will be staying with Jeff's Ice O Minniums. Was wondering about gear to bring tip ups or not, any info would be appreciated.

Not familar w/ Jeff's operation, where will you be fishing? What depth?

Posted

Most of the places we have been to provide you with poles to use. Might want to bring your favorite jigs though. The main thing is to have Shmitty bring an extra case of beer and drop it off at the Riverbend resort for Kelly's dad.

Posted

SMITTYY Kelly's aunts and uncles will be at Riverbend(12 of us) maybe you can just have the beer truck stop for us! You probably won't need tips, you keep busy enough jigging and tipping(the beers).Check some other posts for preferred colors on LOW.

I think I had better leave Shmitty at home ,the only thing he has been worried about is that we bring enough beer along. I should maybe bring Scout instead.

Scout won't drink as much beer as Shmitty. We have never stayed out over night. We kind of like coming back to the resort. As far as beer goes,I would say to take enough for 3 days in case the weather gets bad and you are stranded.Food you can live without. Beer???

OK, SMITTY,down to some some serious business now, Stop at Adrian's and get some shiners, better to have, then wish you would have got some. Don't be araid to go light.Jig one pole and watch the VEX,the fish seem to come in spurts. Eat your meals early and late, fish during the daylight hours. GOOD LUCK

BobD: Would be interested in your report from Riverbend when you get back. I'm headed back again the week after you get back. Good luck, and hang on. Bill

Smittyy
Best bring lots of everything! Jeff's houses are not very well equipped. I was up there two weeks ago when it was very cold [47 below] and they had propane tanks on the heat that were just about empty so that the heat went out, I called him on my cell phone and he asked me if I had a sunflower heater? daa, I guess I did't think I had to bring that along to a rental fish house!!! The snow is very deep up there and I could tell that the house had not been moved for a long time, we did catch enough fish for a meal and brought home 6 fish but we fished for three days to do this. I certainly hope your stay goes better than ours did but I think I will be looking for a different place to go for next year. I should say that I have been going to Jeff's for a number of years but his service has gone down hill badly the last couple of years and from what I can see it does not look like it will get better any time soon. Again I hope your trip goes well and the fishing is good. Post later and tell us how it went.

Bill, I will be sure to post and let you know. Is it ok if I charge a couple beers to you for a good report? LOL, I really like riverbend, been looking for a nice place since Scott and Peggy sold, I think we found it.
Thanks for the report I'majigger we will be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.Hey BobD & OZ2Me we will make shmitty buy the beer and the bait if their is any left we will make him find you and drop it off, lol. Good Luck and Good Fishing to All!
[This message has been edited by Smittyy (edited 02-10-2004).]

I talked to Kelly tonight and told her to give you my e-mail address. I will tell you what we use up at LOTW to catch fish. Bob will dis-agree but we usually out fish them. Secret weapons are a must.

Jeff's Ice shacks are not very clean, we didn't care for them, garbage all over. we checked out Sportsmans sleeper shacks they are NICE. Big, clean and they are well equipped!!
pans, dishes, nice new stoves and ovens so we made pizza... sinks, big windows. I think the shacks are new.
Fishing was a little slow but that is the way it goes some days. they moved the house when we were in it.

Posted

OZ,,,in you're wildest dreams,whose shack had the#6, #4 1/2, and two #3's???? And the handicap?

Posted

Ok Ok just teasing to see if you were watching. Are shiners in the forecast for this year? We didn't see a lot of change from regular minnows.I gave Smitty a couple of tips for up there.Maybe you could share some with him.

Posted

OZ and SMITTY. I just asked Bill where Glenn had his shacks. The reason being is ,if there is any small amount of current. they aren't called river shiners for nothing. I've fished LOW in the winter since '86 and the little bit of current will make a differance between shiners and fat heads

Thank you Bob.LOL Your Brother-in law.

I do believe that the handicap BOBD was talking about was the old mill he had!

Thanks Oz and Bob for all the tips, we are probably going to need a trailer for all the fish we catch, or maybe just for the empty beer cans.

Another party heard from, are you guys going to use shiners? I got the GLOJIG's sharpened up and ready to go.

Hi Smittyy. I have stayed at Jeff's for a number of years and, like they have been telling you, he has gotten progressively worse. My son and I fished in one of Jeff's late last spring and the house was quite dirty and we ran out of propane about 5:00 a.m the second morning. It's a good thing that I too had my cell phone. It was pretty cool by the time his help showed up with the gas. I sure wouldn't eat off anything in left in the house or cook with the pots and pans. Bring you own everthing. He puts the houses on some good fishing spots though. It'll be an experience!! Gunny.

Posted

SMITTY, If things get that bad, give OZ a call on the cell, Pam still had a cabin open as of last weekend. And whoever heard of apple pie as a secret weapon?

Posted

Thanks Gunny it sounds like it could a real adventure, but were up to it I hope if we can catch some we will be happy. Hey Bob I heard about how Oz mixed the apple pie, I hope he don't spill any of that on the ice it might melt the whole lake. LOL! Shmitty has their cell # we will call and give you an update on Saturday.

I made the apple pie according to the recipe I got. I renamed it to apple toast.I sent a GLOJIG home with Kelly, try it and let me know how it worked for you guys. We caught a lot of fish on this. LOL.
Dan

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
