Gee whiz, they got it goin' at Long Point.
I havent fished much there for several
years (the lake is just too big to fish
everywhere every year)
Most of the roads were clean and wide. The
secondary roads were still blown in this
morning but you could tell some work had
been done on them by the time we were leaving
around 5:30.
The usual hustle and bustle in the morning
with the addition of many many people driving
till stuck, then a couple of guys would get
out the shovel like crazy hop back in the
truck and off they'd go again till stuck and
the process would be repeated.
We wanted to go to the west and those roads
hadnt been re-plowed since the blow yesterday. We got off the road where we
could, made a turn around spot and parked
out of everyones way the the Suburban facing
the way out. We could have gone further
but I really dont like to shovel.
We pulled the portables about 150 yards. We
had to stop 3 time for rest breaks it was
tough pulling with everything in the sleds
and crust on top of the snow that would
not hold the weight of a person. Stopped
at 32 feet deep water( about 100 yards
shy of where I really wanted to go but
I had pulled far enough and my mind was
telling me I was walking over many fish).
It was 14 below zero and we werent even a
little bit cold by the time we got set up
around 8:30. It warmed up fast and was
a fantastic day on the lake.
The fish bit good and while the biggest
was 17 inches the average size was bigger
than earlier trips. I wouldnt be ashamed
of any of the fish in a cleaning house.
Used my glow red Glow Devil on one line
and a smaller white glow Demon below a
bobber on the other. The Glow Devil would
get em for a while, then the Demon would
be busy. Bob was using a Buckshot Rattle
Spoon and a small Glow Devil beneath a
bobber.
My brother is commin up next weekend, I
think we will be going back to Long Point.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curty
I see you finally listened to enough stories from my dad at Anderson Power (the salesman), that you finally made it over that way. We've always done well at L.P., I feel it's one of the most consistant spots on the lake. And you don't have to drive 7 miles out to get to 32ft. From your discription, it sounds like you were real close to our house. Glad to hear that they still biting up there.

We were in the area where your house is.
Many years ago we fished and Long Point
and it seemed there were always lots of
breakers and cracks. This sure isnt a
problem this year.
The Bergeren boys were still small back
then. Now that they are in prime working
age, they are going a GREAT job on the
roads out there.
I have a super secret fishing spot at Long
Point that I havent fished in over 10 years
at least!
Its a big lake with lots of opportunity
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curt
My Father-inlaw and I fishe out of Adrians, out nine miles. We arrived Friday morning at 6:30, and were set up fishing by 8:00. A very big thank you to the plow driver from Twin Pines for knocking a parking spot for us. You cannot beat the friendliness of the resort operators. We caught 40+ fish the largest being a 22inch walleye(released). Red glow jigs 6" from bottom and gold round jigheads worked best. Lots of fish viewed on the Aquaview camera.

Hunter, Could you give me a little info about your Aquaview camera? How many feet could you see with it on LOW and what was the depth were you using it in? All I ever hear is that they are no good to use on LOW. Sounds like it worked ok for you. We are going up on the 19th was going to leave mine home. Sounds like I should bring it now.
Thanks Dan
icefishing.gif

I have the Aquaview Smartview camera with infrared lights. I estimate that I can see about 6+ feet with it. A friend is a underwater photographer for in-fisherman and other mags, and say's walleye are not affected by the lights of the camera. I have used it for two years now on LOW and have seen some awesome fish. Definately bring it along with your FL-8 an absolute must. Good luck. The gold jig needed constant jigging during the non-peak times to produce strikes.

We fished out of LP East of the resort a mile or three near Dahl's rentals. A friend and I fished from 3-5 pm and came back with 10 fish, 8 saugers, 1 walleye, and one 13 inch perch. Had fish pretty constant on the Vex and the largest sauger went 16 inches. Threw five or six back but not bad for a short trip.

Curt,
Please talk no more about the secret spot.
I know where your talking about and will take it to my grave.
(My group of guys have taken the oath of secrecy)

Saturday I fished from a resort hut set 2 miles or so west of Twin islands in 29 fow, 5 of us 2 grown ups and 3 kids. My slowest day of the year! I caught 19 fish, 1/2 Walleyes and 1/2 Saugers, 6 eyes and 1 Sauger went into the bucket. Kid 1.....11 fish, kid 2.....7 fish, kid 3....5 fish, other grownup.... 5 fish. Fish were tentative at best. Fatheads and Shiners about equal in getting them. No one lure/color seemed to do any better than the others. Finished the day with 21 fish kept, plain tough fishing, but thats February.
fiskyknut

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
