Well let me first set this stroy up a bit. It was last thursday when my wife & I got to LOTW, We stayed the nite at the lake road lodge, Got to remember that it was really cold out but, The room was cold & we had to sleep in our cloths just to stay warm. Then come the trip breaker. Our truck didn't start in the am. Called the only towing place close & he told me he wasn't going out in the cold to jump start anything. So my wife said to call up to ADRIANS to see if any body could help us. As luck would have it she sent down one of her staff to help me get my truck started. After 1 hour of jumping it still no go. So another staffer show up to see if he could help. He went back to the lodge & got a big starting unit & hooked it up . Still no go. He then gave us a ride up to the lodge to get us coffee & breakfast. While we were eating, One of the guys ran & got a heater & put it under the truck & stayed for half a hour tring to get it started while we were eating. He then came & got me & we went back to start the truck. Still took better than a half a hour before it started. All toll 3 hours of there time to get me going again. And we wern't even staying with them. Just goes to show There are Great people up that way!!! A BIG THANK YOU TO Adrians for all there help. We will be staying with them in the future. Did I say that it was -45. Again Thank You & Good Fishin DOUG

Yes Doug the People at Adrians are very
good folks who will help you even more than
you would expect.
Of the 35 or so resorts on the lake and
along the river well over half would do
the same thing,
Good folks on Lake of the Woods.
Remember 45 below is too cold to not have
trouble with something. It becomes a
survival trip more times than not it seems.
My brother was comming up from the cities
last weekend but we decided to reschedule
for a different weekend because we both
hate standing outside trying to get a car
or a truck started when it is 45 below.
Better Luck next trip

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curt, That's good to know. But what Mark & his brother did for us was above & beyond what any body could ask. My hats off to them!!! When I tried to pay them they said no way. But, I did win this conversation. And as far as fishing went we still got some fish & had fun. Cold & all. Good Fishin DOUG

Mr Muskie: Tough time for the trip you had planned. I've never had anything but good things to say about the folks that I have encountered up in that part of the State. There is a heaven on earth and these people really are saints. It's good to hear the commendable things you had to say about these folks. Good advertising goes a long ways. HOpe you get to go back and find lots of fish. Bill

It is very cool to hear these kinds of reports once in a while. That is way above and beyond. Just hearing that will get some of my buisiness to Adrians!!!!
Brian

Mr Muskie: I read over your post, and that's what the Adrian family is like. I do think you meant "Brian" or "Cory" though. They are the Ney brothers. I know they have had the resort, and celebrated their 50th year in business this last year. Grandma Adrian is still around, but her Twin daughters, Marlene and Darlene, with Darlene's two sons, Brian and Cory, and her husband Jim, run a A #1 operation. Like Curt said, everyone up there is ready to help anybody who gets into trouble. I have a place up there and ALL of the Resorts are "Good People". They will tell you though, Plug in the Car or Truck when the temps drop below -0... Good post, and it's good to pass the thoughts on to others. What's that saying, "What goes around, comes around"....Kaz PS..They have the Best Hamburgers on the Point!! Try one sometime...

MrMuskie-Reading your post did my heart good. I grew up in the country near Cambridge,MN and all our neighbors were like that. They would move heaven and earth to help you and never take a dime for it. We tryed hard to always respond in the same manner. How I miss those days. One tip I'll give you if you are ever in the same situation again. It's kind of a pain in the behind, but it can make all the difference as to whether or not your car will start. Before you go to bed at night, besides plugging in your car, remove the battery and bring it into your room or wherever it's warm, and you will be amazed at how much better it will turn your engine over. When it gets as cold as it got, that 10W30 that you easily poured into your engine, gets to be the consistancy of the 90W that you put in to lube the lower unit of your outboard. Therefore, it takes much more power to turn your engine fast enough to start it. Sorry to hear about your problems but your were fortunate enough to encounter human nature at it's best. May the next fish you catch be HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
------------------
YOU CAN'T [PoorWordUsage] AN OLD [PoorWordUsage]'ER!

Would a block heater work at 45 below or is that too cold? Every trip I have taken in Minnesota (I live in Illinois) the people a very kind and helpful. I got stuck the last time I was up there and the guy wouldn`t take any money from me. You guys have a great state to live in!!! Fish On

I was up at LOTW over 1/24-1/26/04 when it was about -35. I had my truck plugged in at Ballard's for 3 days while we were in a sleeper and it fired up like it was sitting in a heated garage. Nor cranking or anything. Strongly recommend a block heater for those really cold days!

Mr Muskie
Sounds like a nasty time. Glad to hear you found some good people to help. What about the place you were staying? Did they offer any help to you as you said you weren't staying at Adrians? Just wondering as am trying to plan a trip up and Adrians is booked. Hope the weather is a little better for my trip.
Keep the rods bendin----Mark

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
