Thanks for the post Datman, I will be heading up to Gibbins for the first time myself on Feb 20th & 21st. Hope the fishing turns on a little better but we will take what mother nature has in store for us.<BR>Glad to hear that the guys at Gibbins take care of you because I do not know what to expect. <BR>Were you able to take out your own vehicle out or did they take you out with the Bomber?<P>love those WI walleyes!<BR>gary

Datman<BR> You learned what lake of the woods is like. That is exactly what the fish do they quit biting at 5:00 pm and don't start till the next morning again. That is why I never stay at sleepers. Day houses for me and then I have to the motel or cabin and take a nice warm shower, watch, tv, have a hot meal, and drink beer. About the only thing you will get in the evening are an occational eelpout. If you bring enough beer allong you can catch a buzz. There will be an occational person that catchs some after hours but it isn't typical.<P>------------------<BR>Grip it and Rip it<P>IFFWalleyes<BR>I Fish For Walleyes<BR>[email protected]

To each his own grin.gif.<P>The only thing missing in the sleeper is the shower. (you can bring a 12 volt TV to the sleeper).<P>I personally love them - I do not have to pack up and move my stuff twice a day.

Posted

To me that's exactly why you need a sleeper. You fish all day while drinking heavily. Usually screwdrivers until 1 pm. Then about 1-5 you switch to beer. Then at 5 pm, you are so drunk you will never make it off the lake. You get after red bull vodka from about 5-12 and you are done for the night. Get up and be fishing and drinking by 8 am the next morning. Sleepers are perfect for that. You don't even have to stop drinking except when you go to bed. I have so much fun up there that sometimes I will set the alarm for 3-4 am just to sit up and have a bump, then get right back to bed till 8. Fishing is worthless at night up there. Bring the cards

I'm glad you stay on the lake.

I'll second that widetrack!!! I like my booze just like the next guy BUT I'm not waking up at 3 AM just so I can have a bump. <P>GOOD LUCK & GOOD FISHING!!!

iffwalleyes<BR>I really didnt mind it out there in the sleeper no waiting to be brought back out there in the morning and all my equipment was right there set up if i wanted to i could just flip the feet over the side turn on the VEX and grab a rod in the moring. It was very comfortable out there and i liked cooking the fish right after we caught them. I will say that it would have been nice for a real tiolet and a shower would have been cool but for a few days i can heat water and wash. I loved it.

bottomfinder<BR>We were brought out in the bomb althought they did offer to let us bring our own auto out although we passed there was a snow storm on it's way and i had the van sits low and no go. those guys took good care of us, we had a radio in the shack to call them and as i said when Lloyd needed a few cold ones and i needed bait (special order bait we had plenty of minnows they supplied) bryant ran to the store picked them up and brought them out to us. it you are marking them and they are following up with no bite use a small rap and tip it with a wax worm, worked for us and that is what we picked the Jumbos up on.<BR>Datman

The Big Gaffer<BR>I quit just over ten years ago (Trust me it was time) Now i actually catch fish. here is a little tip for you forget the screw drivers in the AM go to Ruby Red grapefruit juice and Gin... tell you what those beat the snot out of srew drivers or bloody mary's GREAT BREAFAST DRINK. Good luck and stay in the sleepers, sounds like you have your system down to an art. I do have to ask though do you catch fish or just a buzz?<BR>Keep the lines Tight!

Good news from all you guys that help us that haven't yet figured everything out.<P>Bottomfinder, I booked a trip w/Byant 2-19 through 2-20 - maybe we can trade lies over the radio? Got the family with me this trip - have spent too much time on the road to get by it otherwise and I hope they (the kids) take to it like I did w/my daddy.<P>Big gaffer - don't take too much gruff for your post - you understand the limitations of driving and made/make arrangements for those issues - good job> Isn't it five 'o' clock when anybody's fishing? LOL! Take care.

Hey New Yankee -<P>Is that &#65279;Presidents day weekend that you will be there? If it is I will be there with my wife and nut balls that weekend too.

Well we are back from LOW 1st Trip there, I have to say some mixed feelings out of this trip. 1st of all let me say that Bryant and Jason were great hosts! the acomodations were great. we had a nice (clean) sleeper that we wanted for nothing (other than large fish). We got there 5 hours early, instaed of having us wait they made us right at home and got us started right off. THANKS! we had 15 fish before we were even supposed to be on the ice. They ran to town and got some of the more important things we were running low on, and checked on us to be sure we were okay and had everything we needed. the three of us caught over 60 fish and had three meals of fish while we were out there. Only got to take a few fish home most of the walleye/sauger were on the smaller side we did wind up with some very impressive JUMBO Perch that were over a pound each and had a little fun with two extremly ugly Ellpout. to sum it up we had a great time and some very responsive hosts, one disappiontment was that we are convinced that the fish go to sleep at 5PM and wake at 7:50am we need to bring a few wisconsin walleyes up there to teach yours that it is okay to bite at night.<BR>Thanks Bryant and Jason From Gibbins! (will e-mail pics soon)

Doc,<P>It'll be the following Thursday when we get there, guess I didn't have my shoes off so I could count weekends correctly - we will miss you by a few days I guess.

Datman, thanks for the tip on the Perch I wouldn't mind catching a few of those for the fry pan.<BR>New Yankee, we will be going out on the morning of the 20th maybe we can talk to see how your bite was on the 19th.<BR>*Does anyone know if their is a 12volt system in the sleepers or a battery provided?<P>" jigging for eyes "<BR>bottomfinder<BR>

Bummer - It would have been nice to hook up with you guys.

Posted

Bottomfinder<BR>there is a 12 volt bat for the radio in the sleeper and there is a plug on the outside I had my small Yamaha 400W fired that up and had 120 in the shack.

Great to hear about Gibbons we will be heading up on March 6-7-8th and renting one of the big sleepers.<BR>Talked to one of the guys on the phone the other day and he was very helpful<P>Looks like a A+++++ operation<P>jar jar

JARJAR, I'll be up there with some friends the following weekend in the big sleeper so take real nice care of it for us. Just giving you some [PoorWordUsage]. I'll be waiting to hear your results. I can't wait to get up there after hearing all the great things about Gibbins.

Doc or Datman - on the house battery, is it equipped for a 12 volt cig plug? Thinking of the van's TV for the kids - it may even be worth it to haul a cheap car battery up there to run it!

Posted

New Yankee<BR>You may want to bring yours or like i did a small genorater the battery in the house is hooked to the ship to shore and there are no cig pugs on it, I am pretty sure that the fellows at gibbins would hook you up with a second if you called ahead and asked them.

Datman or anyone that has been to Gibbins this winter, where on the lake did Gibbins have their houses set up at when you went? Just wondering as I have a trip planned up there for March. Thanks

ICE MAN<BR>we were in approx 28 feet of water about three miles out from gibbons, they had sevral shacks there and i iknow forsure they had at least one scack 16 miles out (Bryant got stranded out there when we were there he ran out of gas in the bomb) lots of small fish were we where. i hope that march turns the big one on for you. Good luck <BR>DATMAN

Thanks for the reply Datman. This is my first trip to LOW so I am fairly new at this. Is Gibbins out of Long Point or Zippel Bay, places like that? I just read on their website it's out of Bostic Bay. I am just trying to figure out where it is when I read all these reports, so I know where we'll be by. Thanks for the help. <p>[This message has been edited by Iceman12 (edited 02-05-2004).]

I hope to be fishing….  It’s so rare that I get to go, I hate passing up the opportunity. 😉

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
