Hitting some Trout this weekend!

So, I found this sweet Guided Trout ice fishing deal for this weekend.  They have a pretty nice setup with food and bar, they provide the rods, bait and gear and take care of your fish for the drive home.  I've heard about for a few years but just never pulled the trigger!

I did actually spend a day over on Big Watab giving it a shot for Rainbows.  Tried about 5 different spots, saw one rainbow and one pike come through.  Had two Wardens roll in and check my license, he said hardly anyone was getting anything.  That seems to be the way that lake is, either on or off! 

He did ask me where I was from I said Sartell, he said oh your license says Brooklyn Center? I said oh we moved there about a year ago, my wife must not have reminded me to change it?  He laughed, I laughed.  He said make sure you change it when you renew it this time!

When did you go out there leech.  I drove by there 2 weeks ago and it was packed and heard they were snapping. 

 

Not much for trout as an eater fish

Last Friday, it was still pretty busy for a week day.  

I've gotten a few out of there over the years.

Back in the 70s when a bunch of us early teenagers would go to the SportShow, we figured out the flies never got down to the trout with all the moving water. A little split shot solved that problem.

I'll have to say I was getting a little bummed out watching the kids fish the pond at the show yesterday. One little kid with his dad hooked 3 fish and never got a one in! One teen girl had probably the biggest in the tank on and it broke her off!  With the smooth barbless hooks and the Walmart 1lb line. It's freeking worst then a carnival game on the midway!  Great way to get kids involved!

Well, this one is only about a 1/4 the size of the one down in the cities.  And if you don't have $12,000 to $120,000 to buy a ATV, boat or camper. For the $10 to get in and $3.50 to park.  It can be fun to have a hotdog, snag some freebie pens, cozies and candy and watch the kids fish!

All us kids lived in the west metro. We would take a bus into Mpls to go to the NorthWest SportShow. One time nobody brought the sinkers. We  bought them either at a hardware store or Dayton’s. The downtown Dayton’s had a sporting goods dept. and a corner with fishing stuff. They also carried Evan’s Shag Spoons. An awesome spoon for bass, walleye and northerns. Very similar to a Little Cleo. We’d all go home with a trout or two in the plastic bag in our winter coat pocket on the bus. Yes, we’d get looks.

Wait what? "The downtown Dayton’s had a sporting goods dep" I used to go there all the time with my Mom and never saw one?  Or she knew enough not to take me over there!

Don't remember what floor the sporting goods dept was on or how extensive it was since I only went there for the fishing stuff a few times. The fishing stuff was in a corner and consisted of a few shelves and a peg board. Probably had red and white bobbers, rope stringers, fancier safety pin stringers, Eagle Claw hooks. The standards for the 70s.
