This will be my first opener on Pokegama so I'm looking for any bits of wisdom about walleyes early in the year. Any tips about spots to try, time of day, what to use etc would be much appreciated!

For starter's I'd fish the west side of the causeway on hwy 169 using a jig/shiner combo. If the waves are pouding into it, all the better, othewise I would try it early morning or evening and even after dark. Be advised there are some lake trout caught there this early in the season, so you may want to have a trout stamp, cause ya' just never know. I think there is also a sunken island when you go through the cause way, going east, and then follow the north shorline to the east. That's another early season producer, or at least it has been in the past.

The causeway can be a good low light location on Pokegama. The good fishing here almost always coincides with current at the causeway. Current is the result of drawdown at the dam or a strong East or West wind. With the conditions we have now hope for some wind or the causeway may be a little slow.

Opener on Pokey has stumped many folks. I would suggest that if you struggle on Pokey take a boat ride into Jay Gould or the river. Early season in these bodies of water can be great. Try the channel adjacent to the warm water discharge if all else fails. Some great fishing for all species can be had in these locations.

Good Luck

Family plans kept me from the opener. My next chance will be Memorial weekend. Same advice, or should I try something different?
