2022 Lake Vermilion Fishing Reports

Good report Skunked. Been up here going on two weeks and aside from today and yesterday afternoon the fishing has been lights out. Various depths, but 32 seems to be my go to right now. Simple jig/minnow.

Fished Monday pm to Wednesday am.  Didn't fish for long since the wife and puppy were with, but we did catch a fair number of walleyes.  Most were 12-17 inches but after last nights storm, I caught a bunch of 10inch eyes, and finally caught my first slot fish (23inches) this open water season.  Don't know why I couldn't catch any big eyes this open water season.  Chubs were catching more fish, but the smaller ones.  The eyes were biting very slow on pike suckers, but if you let them suck on them a while, the hook rate was better.  Fortunately I didn't gut hook any fish.

 

Quite a change in weather from Tuesday (73F) to Wednesday morning (44F).  Water temperature was 53F.  There was still plenty of fall color on Vermilion but Tuesday strong winds definitely impacted it.  Good luck fishing, and enjoy the fall on the lake.

You are much braver than I am now.  I only dared to go up to the 2nd of 5 levels for my photo this October (same direction as your photo).  Back in the 80's I actually climbed the Jasper Peak fire-watch tower on the outside frame to overcome my fear of heights.  Now I can't even get past the 2nd level, although the wind that day contributed to my caution.

Fished Tuesday evening to Thursday morning on my last trip up before deer season.  Didn't spend much time out fishing because of numerous projects I had going on.  Fishing was pretty slow for me, but the big girls finally showed up.  After catching only one 23" slot eye all summer, I caught 5 between 24-27", all healthily released.  The pictured 27" eye (7#-7oz) is my biggest ever on open water season.  Didn't catch much else, but did end up taking home a good meal.  I had no bites on the 2 mornings I fished, and the evening bite was very short and concentrated in a small area.  Had to search to find active fish.  Equal action on chubs and pike suckers.  When I ran out of minnows Wednesday night, I put a half crawler on and landed a nice eater within a couple of minutes.  I fished only with crawlers Thursday and didn't have a bite.

 

The lake was covered in algae, but the winds knocked that off later.  There was a little bit of ice along the shore Wednesday morning, but warmer weather put an end to that.  Very quiet on the lake Tuesday and Wednesday, but tons of boats were heading to the lake Thursday for the MEA weekend.  Looks like the weather will be beautiful this weekend.  Good luck fishing and enjoy the fall beauty.  I pulled my boat out of the water and am done for the season unless I get my buck early.

We were up last weekend Thursday-Sunday. Weather was terrible but fishing was great. Only got to fish our best spots one day because of wind. Caught fish using husky jerks, jigging rap, drop shot, jig and plastic, jig and minnow, and lindy. Anywhere from 5-35 feet. Bites were constant. Probably a 4:1 bite to hookup ratio. Ended up keeping 34 throughout the weekend. Only 2 slot fish which was strange. Handful of jumbo perch, smallies, and northerns. Lots of smaller walleyes in that 12” range as well so that will be good for next year.

Fished big bay Friday, best action in 30' holes. Walleyes tight on bottom needed to go slow < 0.5 mph and bite was light. Used lindys, rainbows caught the most, bigger pike suckers caught bigger fish.

Hey everyone! I made it up two weeks ago but forgot to post a report... Small Walleyes were all over the deep holes. Could catch 12-14"er's all day. Bigger ones were shallower but didn't eat as often. Minnows worked but most fun was with Jigging Raps. BAM! On the upswing they were there. Leadcore bite was slow.

I'm hoping to continue to come up to the lake and possibly buy a full-on cabin in the future! Our baby girl has reduced the free time we have so we are deciding to buy the lot behind our home back in the cities to have more wilderness in our back yard.

Spent Monday/Tuesday on the lake with my son, chasing walleyes early/late and smallmouth in the middle of the day.  The fishing remains good for both species and I would even go so far as to say we put a hurt on em.  We fished both East and West, where we found water temps ranging from 43 to 45.  Not many folks on the lake these days.  Very peaceful. 
 

Walleyes…most of our catch was 17” - 20” fish, with lots of slot fish mixed in, and several ‘overs’ each day casting artificials.  Jeff got his biggest of the year Sunday (28”) on a chatterbait, followed by a new PB Monday that weighed 9lb 4oz (photo below).  All our fish were released.  
 

Smallies…nice average size with several over 4lbs each day, on small paddletails and jig/craws on deeper rocks.  Low and slow were the keys. 

 

Looking at the forecast, open water opportunities have come to an end for us.  That’s always a sad realization, but has us looking forward to the coming ice season.
