What's up with the weed cutting

Recommended Posts

I'm so sick of that stupid weed cutter on DL and Sallie. Why do they need to cut the weeds? Is it because the lake property owners want a clean beach? Is there any scientific reason? I was out on DL last night fishing muskies and the best spot on the lake is basically unfishable because of the mats of floating coontail. You can't even troll on this lake because of the mess they leave behind. Nobody seems to now why they do it and I haven't seen any other watershed district do it so why the hell does our watershed need to do it. I had a friend who worked for the watershed and he didn't know why they cut the weeds.

Wobbler, I'm not sure, but I think the weeds get pretty prolific in the shallows and it makes it tough for property owners to enjoy their lakefront property or get their boats out. I know the weeds are worse this year than the last two and the public beaches are full of reeds. Some property owners will "tip" the drivers of the weed picker-uppers to clean out their beach. A little wind will usually push it all to one shore but it has been pretty calm the last few days. What kind of boat do you have? I've probably seen you out as I've been out there a few times this last week.

Thankfully after Tues. most of the weeds were pushed to shore. I just don't understand property owners, why buy lake property on a weedy lake if you don't like weeds? If I were to buy property on LOTW I'm not going to ask the Canadian goverment to remove boulders from in front of my land. I do agree about the weeds are growing thicker, but if the state would put stricter reg. on lake propery owners most of the weed issue would be solved. Just my opinion

I got a Tan Alumacraft Navigator with a 50hp yamaha 4-stroke. What kind of boat do you have? I'm sure we've crossed paths, maybe even cut each other off once or twice....lol

Has anybody asked the DNR about "why"? I don't often fish either of the lakes, usually just "excursion" them once a year to see how the lake properties have developed and whishing I had invested in some swamp properties back in '63 when I got graduated from DLHS. I do know a few people (casually) that live on the lakes and they curse the weed cutters as much as the fisherpeople do. However, to my knowledge, these two lakes have the most prolific top water weeds of any of the lakes I frequent...OK, it might be a tie between Little DL, Muskrat, Sallie & Melissa. Maybe it's done at the request of our "good friends", the PWC owners? (Joking). Interested to see of anybody can find the answer. "Who do you call? WEEDBUSTERS!" Good Fishing!

Got weed problems? Call the DNR. We were on Big DL this afternoon and saw the DNR team in a neat Yamaha 18' tow boat, like the wake boarders would use (a word of caution to those that look for an "offical" looking boat). After we passed them (with their binocs checking out the lake) I saw the DNR emblem on their boat and circled back to talk to them. Couple of nice young gentlemen. Inquired about the weed cutting thing and almost got a lecture on marine biology! I'll try to sum it up. The orange machines are hired by the Pelican River watershed district. Their aim is to cut down the Blooming Bullrush before it blooms and becomes more wide spread. (Take a look at all the short "bullrush" around the channel between Big & Little DL, and along the east side of Cox's point). That and the reduction of other "exotic" aqua plants is the primary goal. If you see a weed cutter that is not orange in color, that is a private contractor that his been hired by an individual propery owner, but is licensed by the state.
This DNR guy was cool. He is against the weed cutters! (Like cutting timber from the forest, he said)
His suggestion, if you really have a problem with the weed cutters, contact MN DNR on their website. Sorry, he rattled off the website & I didn't have pen and paper in the boat, but I know you can use SEARCH for it easily online.

Hope this is of some help!

Wobbler, I think I may have seen you a few weeks back. If it was you, you were jig fishing for walleyes near the bluff area. I've got a 16 foot Northwood with a 25 evinrude on the back, I'll usually have my white dog and possibly my daughter with me. I'll keep an eye out for you.

Probably wasn't me since I haven't fished for Walleyes on DL this year. I do fish the Bluffs quite a bit for Muskies though. I usually only fish Big D during the week. I'm usaully fishing solo, so if you see a guy in a Tan 16ft Alumacraft tossin musky baits by himself stop by and say hi. I'll also keep an eye out for you.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
