Nobody must be fishing. I suppose the weather has plenty to do with it though.

I haven't heard of much happening either. I will be up in early June.

Peter, you been fishing? Either you have been catching so many you can't talk about it, or your banking your fishing hours up!

I've mostly been banking my hours, but can't seem to find a decent day to get out when I have my daughter with me and moms at a function. I've been snooping around at night and catching some but the temp and shiners not running is my biggest deterent. With out a boat I can't get out deep enough to find staging fish. If it ever gets nice and the shiners finally make their run, the fishing should be fantastic. There are still crappies in area lakes that haven't spawned yet so that is nice. Noah told me yesterday that you were coming the 6-10th of June, is that correct? I'll be able to sneak out with you guys some (especially during the day), and hopefully one or two nights. We should think about making a day run up to URL, craps should be snapping by then. We'll see you in a couple weeks, until then, catch em' if you can.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty quiet is right.

Can't we talk a little walleye fishing without giving away our favorite spots??

I've been catching nice ones after dark. What a blast (and the traffic goes waaaaay down)!! smile.gif

So are the shiners done spawning now?? I've been seeing about 62 degrees lately and was wondering if it's just starting, mid-way, or almost over.

How about the mayfly hatch?? I think I seen a couple in the livewell yesterday. When does this typically peak and what do you guys do to continue catching fish during this phase??

I tried Ottertail on Saturday. Tried deep, tried shallow, tried in between and finally said screw it and went for a boat ride while coming across a shall bar saw a smally swimming around and tried for small mouth and ended up landing a 19" small mouth. DIdn't expect to catch anything but I figured it was better then just baking in the sun. Came back to Crookston Sunday and figured I would try the river here in town for catfish. Ended up getting a 16 pound 14 ounce Catfish. So if the walleyes aint a biting maybe try the rivers for catfish they are differnt fish but they can be some fun if ya are interested. Good Luck Fishing

Things are starting to look up a bit on lida, it was pretty quiet there last week, one here one there, same old game, brings the hunter out in ya. The suprise bite has been the crappies there, up shallow, good action and the size was decent. Was out yesterday leeches were the flavor of the day for waldos. Looking forward to spinner time... Went out on Tuesday and caught 4 walleyes in about 1 hour and lost another 5. Used fatheads under a bobber in 5 feet of water near some thick cabbage. Smallest 19" and largest 21". Caught them with my panfish rod. What a fun challenge that was. My wife had 2 bust off just as we were about to net them. Wont mention the lake (sorry, can't give all of the info out) but at least I had some success for the first time this year on open water.

I fished Lida last week...wed & thurs and had no luck with the walleye bite....first year my honey hole was not so good to me. I did run into a bunch of nice small mouth bass...all very fat and heavy. They were just smoking my rapalas...it was a lot of fun...they sure do fight hard...

I am now heading up to Rainy lake for four days...never been there before...really looking forward to it.

good luck this weekend.

Hey Paul,
Thought you'd never show up again. Looks like I won't be heading up anytime soon as I would have liked to. Got Ohio coming up for a Frisbee Gold Tourney and then the family vacation in Myrtle Beach in July. If the monies can support it, I might try to convince her to let me and a friend come up in late August to Sept time frame for a four-five day weekend. Would probably stay at Hills since I wouldn't have the kids and would only be needing a place to put my head down for a few hours a night. Hope this year is a good one for you. How are the water levels now that you have gotten some rain? Can you get around better? Drop me and email and take care of you and the family.

Have had a couple of trips to Tulaby Lake that were somewhat successful. Bunch of small walleyes and a couple of nice ones. The biggest went a little over five pounds (released). Last night, I tried Long here near Detroit Lakes. There were some Mayfly bodies floating on top of the water. Only marked two fish on the depth finder. Did see a bunch of bass up in the shallows while I was looking, unsuccessfully, for crappies. Things are getting better.

cicada: Speaking of Tulaby...a buddy of mine from work went out there Memorial weekend in the nasty weather (he's got a cabin out there). He went looking for crappies in the bay over by the outlet and found stacks of walleyes in 9-13 feet. The ONLY thing they would touch was a leech on a slip bobber. He said they threw back over a dozen that went around 5 lbs and kept a limit of smaller ones.

Kind of interesting huh?

This last weekend he said it was back to normal and the bay was dead.

Another co-worker said White Earth is kicking out some nice fish now.

Hmmmm...so many places I'd like to go and so little time. smile.gif

Hey Kelly!
Water levels are low but not unbearably low like last fall. The harbor at linden shores was useable last week. A couple fridays ago I was fishing and was near one of the more notorious rock bars, I saw a boat coming, he wasnt slowing down or turning, I went to the guys in my boat hey watch this, then I cringed just as they bottomed out, You gotta pay a little more attention to where your going lolol. Sometimes guides arent just for finding fish, a morning with me would have saved them what it cost them to fix their motor. I had zero time to wave them off or warn them. The big rock on the turn into bass harbor also claimed a motor this year, he even knew better..Guiding has been a little slow this year but with my shoulder the way it is thats ok by me, it needs the rest. I think 2 dollar gas scared alot of people.
Was out with my dad tonite (he likes to drive occasionally) we scrounged up a few eaters before we nerved out and got off the water before the weather got bad. I hate lightning.. You should make Cord an offer on the hill! Come up here permanent. For sale signs all over oak lodge "summer village" now, kinda sad :-(. Just give a shout before ya come up!! Paul

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
