Hey Fisherdog, Can we get together sometime and go out fishing. I met you one time last summer out on Big D. Are you still housed on the lake?
I would like to see if we can put a web site together for the Quality Bait bait store. I think it could help us all out. I had a tough time just finding his phone number the other day.
Shoot me your email address.

The house I was in last summer was a family rental cabin, but I'm now housed across from Big D about 200 yards from the south access. about the website for Quality bait, you'd have to talk to John and see if he'd want a website, but I don't think he'd mind free advertising. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to those things, so it would be all you. I also don't have my boat anymore so I'd be more than happy to tag along with you. I think I'll offer everyone free guide service in exchange for someone to take me out in their boat smile.gif. I'm tenatively planning on getting out with a friend on Sunday afternoon and we'll either wade fish or borrow a 12' duck boat from another friend and use an electric motor I have. You're more than welcome to take us out in your boat if you'd like smile.gif. We've got some small lakes in mind that we think will produce right now but we need a boat to get to the spots. My email is at the top of the DL forum main page, just click on my name in blue where it lists the moderators. We can get in touch on the phone after that.

Why in the world did you sell your boat!!! Good thing Noah convinced me to not sell mine...considering all it does is collect rain LOL!!!

You better find some fish for me to catch next weekend.
I got some spots that sound like they will be prime in another week if those are the current temps.

I will be up there next friday night. Look forward to actually meeting and fishing with ya.

I had to sell it when we moved from Fargo. For some reason the houses in DL run around $35K more than in Fargo and it just happened that my boat payment coverd the extra $35k on a 30 year mortgage. Plus we had it tied into a home equity loan on our Fargo home and we needed that equity money for down payment on the new home since the Fargo home hadn't sold when we closed on the DL home. Either way I was screwed, I will definately be getting a new on before the ice is out next year so Noah will be out fishing a lot more, something I'm sure Angie will be happy about LOL. See you next Friday, I can join you guys Fiday afternoon and again either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, I'm looking forward to it and GPSing some new hotspots smile.gif.

Hammer and Dog,

Just got off the phone with you, Dog. Hammer, I thought you had said the weekend after that- I must be confused (what's new?) I'm going to try make it over for one day that weekend, but it'll depend on how much help my sister and bro-in-law need at their place (major project in gear there). With or without me, it'll be a fun time on the water.

Yeah, I said the first weekend in May. Guess that could be either this weekend or next. Oh well.

Planning on being there this Friday. Sounds like the weather should cooperate.

Not much happening. Getting ready to tie the knot this summer. Lots of planning.

Hope you can join us this weekend. Later on in the afternoon or evening is usually the best...at least the last few years.

Ryan

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
