Spring panfishing..

Recommended Posts

Today was soooo nice out! it's got me in the mood.lol Looking l;ike ice out in a couple weeks on the small waters, three weeks on the bigger lakes. It got me thinking about getting back in the boat (which is ready to go by the way) and getting back into the guiding shoes. So who's up for some panfishing? I'll run a few evening trips for $60. Trips will run two hours or better. I'll do saturday and sunday day trips for $175 for an 8 hour trip up to 2 people. I'll do this right up till walleye opener or until the panfish bite slows up. Anyone game? Just shoot me an email or give me a jingle, I'll be here this weekend, then down south fishing next weekend then back into the open water season for me! Just because the resorts arent open doesnt mean theres nothing to do, send the wife shopping and stay at one of the areas pretty good motels. I like the holiday inn in detroit lakes. The pool and hot tub feel great after a day of outdoor activities, good restraunt and bar too! Lots to do and not much for crowds.. Evening trips will start out in the lake park area while weekend trips will start from detroit lakes, pelican rapids and perham areas.. Lets have some fun!! Paul

Hey Paul Rohweller,
I have a question for ya. I respect your authority and you do a lot of work on this website but I have a question to ask you. In the guidlines to post it says "No unauthorized commercial or promotional posts." How is this post of yours not considered one? I don't want to be an a$$ but I dont' understand why you can post one for guiding rates and costs and it not be considered a commericial. If Brad Laabs Fish Guiding or Dick Beardsly were to be posting the same thing would there be a line drawn in the sand? I just don't think your post was really appropriate for your position and I strongly feel if one of us were to be advertising something like this it would be closed. Tell me what you think.

Good question. Heres how I can justify my post.
Do you see them here awnsering questions or paying for advertising? Nope. They are more than welcome to come and share too! They've been invited. I've been here since the very beginning of this place and had a hand in what it has become. What have I made from my efforts? We moderators all donate our time in return for some guide work. (those of us who guide) so basically we work for free (is this actually work?) If I can put up a post looking for work MAYBE once a year maybe it would justify the countless hours and late nights I've put in if I can book a trip or two. did ya notice I cut my full day rate for this springs fishing until opener? Maybe next time I wont. You wont hear me advertising on the radio or tv, you might see me in the print occasionally or thru the pelican rapids chamber of commerce but other than that this is all the advertising I do. Maybe this cleared it up a little bit?? Ice is soon out!! Paul

I guess me personally don't see any problem with Paul's post. If paul is able to attract a few people with his ridicoulously low guiding rates for spring panfishing the more power to him. I don't post a lot on here, but I have witnessed how much time and dedication paul has spent on this site. I understand where your comming from fishinman, but I know paul has given alot of tips and helped save a few people a lot of money (by tellin them where to bring their outboards, storage etc). He is a great resource for anyone fishing the DL area and I hope he is here for many years to come.
Take care,
Brad

Paul is a sponsor of this site!!!

Holy Crap Paul....sounds more like you need a fishing buddy than anything. Those are some super prices you are offering. If any of you are looking for a fantastic fisherman, but an even better person....give Paul a call. Paul knows his fishing, and will not hold back on information or his favorite fishing spots. You know what, for those prices maybe I'll jump in the boat with you. I could always learn a few new spots.

Good Topic, Good Rates and an even better man. Wish I could be there!!! Maybe next time, you could advertise "SPECIAL RATES UNTIL OPENING DAY" instead of listing the prices. Only a suggestion to reach a happy medium since what you posted (which I don't believe was wrong) seemed to light a candle under someone's backhind. Good Fishing to everyone.

I'll jump on the band wagon too. I don't personally know Paul but this site is a heck of a resource. Kudos to Rick and the rest of the staff. As far as I'm concerned they can advertise all day as long as this site keeps on going. Take Care All!

Dang Nibbit! I knew I shouldn't have moved to Fargo...

I am going to address this one too. For someone to come on here and read for free it is a great site. But it costs somebody something. Everyone is welcome to be a sponsor. Want to be a sponsor? Break out your checkbook and put the time in that it takes to moderate or write articles for this site.

Paul is a sponsor of this site and has been one of the first people involved since it’s inception a long time ago. He knows his fishing very well and if you have followed this site you know he is willing to share his fishing and lake knowledge. If you look at the posts he has posted, articles he has written and the information that he has shared then you will see he spends a great deal of time keeping this forum informational and running smoothly.

I have been on the water with Paul and have to say I was very impressed. His equipment is superior, his ability to put you on fish is excellent and his company just makes for a great day on the water. Heck he don’t even get to excited when a 20oz cup of coffee gets spilled in the upper deck of the boat!!

If you are looking for a serious day of fishing or just a “kick back” day of catching fish and having fun then give Paul a call.

Great post Jeff. Very well stated, however, I have heard told that he will get excited when people (Texans-I believe) have been drinking all day and then decide to duke it out in his boat. Know how to swim??? LOL. Keep up the good work Paul and I will be contacting you about a 4 day weekend coming up in June.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
