never had a regulator on it or on the mr. heaters I have

Might be a dirty or clogged gas orifice.  Get a welding tip cleaner wire and run it through the tip.  You can also try adjusting how far the gas tip is in or out of the air tube in the two holes it's by. 

Try this, when it's running block off one of the side holes half way with your finger and see if the flame goes away?

If so your getting more air then gas. More of less the gas/air mix is off.  Which could be from a dirty tip.
