OK the last couple of posts have me thinking of another question.   Any special knot for light line?  I always try to do a palomar knot just because I think its easy and I like two loops through the eye.  But the eyes on some of these jigs sometimes is tough to double loop, though maybe that is not the case if I downsize the line?  If one loop through, I do what I was taught as the Stren knot I am sure there is another name for it, but one time through the eye, twist 5-8 times, come back though the bottom loop and pull tight.

Sounds like the Stren knot is the clinch knot.

The Trilene knot is the improved clinch knot.  Once you get the tag end through the loop at the bottom, you double it back through that loop you just made.

The Palomar is usually the quickest and easiest along with being the strongest, but like you mention, it can really tough to get it done on those small eye jigs.  At that point I go with whatever clinch knot my eyes and dexterity allow!

Trilene knot starts by going thru eye twice,,,

I just use the clinch on ice jigs unless it has a big eye for line like on a spoon then the Trilene knot. 5 wraps on the clinch and 4 on the Trilene. Always wet it before the snug up. Never have tried the palomar. I would think it would be really tough to get the looped line through.

That’s why I’m NOT Pro Staff. ?

Never did go through twice and probably never will on that one!

Been typing that Trilene for almost fifty years. Lol. Can do it while sleeping. ?

I use the snell knot, keeps jigs horizontal. No need to worry about knot position on eye any longer. @Wanderer

improved clinch on mono or floro...  Tied the trilene knot for a long time, had a few come undone over those yrs... never any problems after doing the one extra step to make the improved clinch

That's different I thought that was just for plain hooks?

Not at all, works great. Not hard at all to master.

Been tying snells on #8 hooks for years, a 4mm ice jig gap isn't much different. Give it a try ?

Here's one from a friend of mine.

He is one of the best, in worldwide competitive ice angling, enjoy.

Easy knot, works great ?

Snell would work good if tying at home or in a comfy shack.... Might be a little tougher with cold, wet hands....or on a windy day though...I will give it a try next time I use a longer shank tungsten

So which one is your favorite @slipperybob?

My favorite is ASSO Micron3.

It's not the strongest, but I like how it manages overall on my casting reel.  It lays well and avoids fluffing off the spool.  Then again, I can change my mind in the future if something else comes along and works better.

Casting reel?  Interesting.

Back in the late 90s I used a Shimano Curado 100 as my walleye jigging reel. This was back before anybody was concerned about line spin and such... It worked pretty darn good, desipie using a ice rod upside down...and fishing the spine of my rod vs. the belly...but didn't know anything about that back then either, so it didn't really matter ?   Hmmmmm, might have to look into a 50 size casting, and build a rod for it?

I’m still running a couple casting reel combos for ice.  Walleye/pike/lake trout set ups.  They honestly work best for set lines though.  Nearly all of my jigging gets done with spinning reels for the larger stuff and will be exclusively in line for the smaller stuff jigging, keeping my best small spinning rigs for light set lines just because I still like them.

I’m just a huge, huge fan of in lines now and wouldn’t hesitate to line one up for walleyes specifically.

Eye can see it for eyes. This is a panfish thread you two.    ?I suppose a bait cast would be nice for spin stop. That’s a good thing.
