Hi Everyone.  I just got back from 5 days on Lake Vermilion and the fishing for me was very good.  I primarily fish walleyes, but I managed to catch a few nice small mouth as well.  I marked on the Helix fish in the 18-23 ft area in the mud, and so tried to use lead core and met with limited success.  Not as much luck compared to previous years.  But I did always scratch out a few.  The mayfly hatch is on, and this may have affected my luck during the day.  Between crushing heat to stormy weather with large temp variations I think I did very well.  And the wind during the day was brutal.  I may have fished in rougher water, but I can't remember when.  I always got half a dozen a day, and my biggest was a 25" mixed with a few 23's. By far though, was my success fishing the shallows.  Trolling in Pike Bay, in water 6-9 ft deep, especially in the late afternoon and evening, produced phenominally for me.  Do not underestimate how good the mayfly hatch can be in shallow water!  Shallow Shad Raps, mixed with trolling Mimic Minnows (1/8 oz) will produce.
