Looking for tips on Red River Fargo/Moorhead area

Looking to fish the red for the first time, never fished a river before. Just looking for some advice for finding some walleye/sauger around the FM area, looking to stay within 10-15 minutes of town. I have some gum drop jigs and plastics i plan on using. Just maybe looking for some advice on where to even begin the hunt, or even what to look for? I appreciate any help. Thank you!

Which side of the river are you planning to fish? The dams are an easy place to start. I’ve fished the dam right off main avenue but haven’t caught much there. There’s another dam off 12th/15th ave north that i have done much better at but haven’t fished it since they redid it.

Either side works for me, I ice fish minnesota so i have both licenses. I checked out the dam on 12Th ave n, watched some people for a while and only saw some goldeneye and a small cat caught. Would you recommend right on the downstream side of the dam where the water is pretty choppy? Or going down stream of the dam a ways?

I always fished downstream of the dam and never saw anyone fishing the upstream side but it could be worth a try. I would try to get into the spot where the current starts to slow some and try to find the current breaks.  When they redid it a few years ago they filled some of the holes that I would normally target. I’m sure there are still fish there based on the numbers of people that fish there.
