Well, The DNR has a "scientific" methodology that they utilize. To be honest, having heard it explained, read the explanation, and been a part of the process, I must admit that I am just as confused as you are Leech. You can in fact go on line and look up MNDNR hooking mortality studies.

I'll say now, I don't agree with the "formula", I don't agree with system, and I don't agree with the numbers. 

Some of it is observational, people sitting in landings counting boats, people, activity. Some of it is anecdotal, kinda sorta observational, and a majority of it is from first hand interviews. Those folks employed by the DNR to sit in boat landings, or come out onto the lake in the winter to do interviews with anglers. They come up with angler hours, catch rates, and extrapolate how many fish are theoretically killed upon release.  Summer months are particularly high due to water temps, baro pressure, handling, etc.

How they discount water skiers, pleasure boaters, muskie fishermen, bass fishermen, launches, pan-fishing, lying/exaggerating fishermen, etc. is complex, confusing, brain numbing, and ridiculous.

This has been going on for 20 years, and there is no end in sight.

I like to think that there are too many predator fish (walleye, northern, musky and small mouth bass) for the available forage base to sustain. You can't have everything at once yet here the DNR is trying to make the lake into everyone's dream lake. One of the predator fish has been stocked (Musky) and one protected (small mouth bass)  allowing the natural balance to tilt away from walleyes. This happened because of intense political lobbying efforts of the groups that support these types of fishing activities.

I dont know.  In my experience at mille lacs, which was a few years back, i saw no shortage of tiny perch and crayfish and I know there is also tulibee in there

Start eating more Smallmouth they are not bad had them in Canada once put side by side with walleye couldn't hardly tell the difference. I know the bass guys are probably going to rip me for saying that but what the heck why not eat em.

I fish bass primarily and your not wrong. No harm in keeping the smaller bass for management, they are tasty.

As as far as making a point, do you have one to add on this subject?  You added no information or new facts what so ever, other then your feelings and an old history lesson that we have all heard a 1000 times.  The fact is, the Red Lake Band is in charge and manages the majority of the largest fresh water lake in the state of Minnesota.  For the sake of all mankind we hope they get it right this-time!   

I didn't say your data was wrong.  I said it was incomplete.  Comparing the number of lbs taken and allotted in two different years without stating the lbs of total fish in the lake was a non point.  Wasn't trying to add a whole lot of new data but was referencing the fact that non natives have the right to use our land for any commercial business we se fit as mandated by our gov't but not allowing the natives to do the same with their own land and waters is hypocrisy.  We pollute waters with factory and farm runoff and destroy fisheries all over the US and my guess is that there are close to zero post on this site saying boo to that.  When do we decide to do something about that?  When the impact is noticed.  When did the Band start to manage the lake better?  When the impact was noticed.  Enough said on my account.
