We had 120 people up at Arnesen's Resort this past Thursday-Sunday for Ice Team University.  It's no secret the conditions are tough (snow and travel on the lake) but the team at Arnesen's shuttled all of us out to some productive fishing areas!  We fished out of the portables for the most-part, they just assisted in getting our gear out.  We fished about 8 miles out and depths ranging from 24-31 feet.  Caught A LOT of walleye, sauger, eel pout and tullibee.  Also a handful of pike.  Most of the larger fish came through high off the bottom... namely 4-8 feet off the bottom.  If you fished closer to the bottom then you caught a pile of little fish... you had to force yourself to fish higher in the water column and you'd get bit.  It's a tough concept, especially when you're marking fish on the bottom, but rest-assured that the groups that fished higher BY FAR caught the larger fish.

We used Clam Pro Tackle Leech Flutter spoons and Pinhead Mino Spoons in 1/8oz.  Gold or glow red were hot, also the new glow orange and glow rainbow colors.  I personally did the best with a Drop XXL glow red jig tipped with a whole minnow through the lips... so basically larger panfish tackle.  They would take it in the fall, so if you had a fish come up and act neutral, I would snap it up a foot or so and let it fall, then about 90% of the time the fish would just crush it!

Largest walleye was 29".  Largest sauger was 19.25".  Largest eel pout was 9 pounds 7 ounces.  Largest perch was 13.25".  Large pike was 39".  Overall it was a phenomenal event and the team at Arnesen's is first-class all the way!!

Here are a couple pics...

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
