Smartz bay is ice free, there's a little ice left on the west end frazer bay, it looks like niles bay is about 50% ice free. We're making progress, just need  some warm temps and a  big blow to bust up the rest of the lake.

Still a good chunk of ice on Big Bay by McKinley Park at 5pm Saturday.  Stuntz Bay had some ice in the Wharf and a raft of ice just out of the bay.

I'm going off of memory, but I think that the 29th is the traditional/average ice-out date for Vermilion. Looks like we will be just about on the mark this season.

Here are the guesses that still have a chance based upon the official ice-out date:

4/29  Cigar Guy

4/30  PSU (posted 1st)

4/30  Raven (posted after PSU)

5/1  Chucker1101

5/2  Tommy

Saw a post on Facebook from Eagle Docks that there is still some pretty solid areas of ice in Frazer and Big Bay. Bummer.....as I was hoping they could of dropped my dock before this weekend!!!

I left our cabin on the Big Bay side of Birch Pt this morning.  Yesterday there was 1/2 mile of open water south of Birch Pt and open water all the way to the west end, with white ice in the pack beyond.  This morning the ice was pushed up against Birch Pt and moving west.  There appears to be about 30+% (maybe more) white ice in the middle of the sheet, but it looks like pretty mushy white ice.  The wind was doing a pretty good job of chewing up the ice this morning.  My "guess" is for mostly open water by the end of the coming weekend with the predicted rain and temps in the upper 40's to mid 50's.  Even with the moderate temps, the clouds are preventing the sun from heating the bottom of the lake to raise the water temperature, which is most of the thawing process according to The Lake Doctor.

What would you put the chances at that big Bay is open by Friday?  I’d love to get my work done this weekend but I am not to optimistic.

Weather is not looking too good for the rest of the week:

But the camera at Fortune Bay looks like the ice has disappeared outside of Everett Bay.

I'm not an expert on final ice out but I would think there is a 90% chance it should be gone by this weekend.  Even if it isn't, you should be able to boat around the lake.

Vermilion Houseboats declared May 30th as the ice out day also.  Congrats to PSU & Raven

So, what do I win with my correct guess, free beer for the summer? :)

Get the beers on ice Skunked.  I feel a terrible thirst coming on :)

You'll each get half a beer, from the same can!

As long as it's an 8 gallon keg from Castle Danger I don't mind sharing with PSU at all :)

If any of you venture into Black Bay on fishing opener, there's a good chance that I'll be fishing off of the dock with my daughter (4th cabin on the right). If I'm not there and neither is my boat, look around in the bay for a red alumacraft. I'll have some beer. Even if you were close on your guesses, stop by for a beer.

I'm on Richie Bay and will for sure be up in Black Bay on opener.  If I can find your cabin I will stop by to collect my prize!  So are you past the Partridge River up into the main bay?  What color is your cabin?

Posted

Yup, main bay. There are five cabins on the right side and ours is the fourth one. It's probably easier to look for my blue and white smurf boat, either sitting upside on shore or tied to the dock.

I apologize to anyone who was looking for me. I spent all of about two hours fishing on Saturday (did catch a few) but mostly was fixing things around the place and forgot to be down on the dock with beers. If you see me, there's a good chance that I'll have your ice-out beer in the boat!

Good luck fishing and safe boating this season.
