Zup's In Cook

Looks like I will be burning up 53 this summer also.   Time wasted that could be used fishing.

No way no how. Road restrictions and frost will put a hold on any work at least until mid May. I’ve actually been trying to bid part of the project but getting nowhere so far.

I just had some concrete work done here in the 612 area code. I had to legally bribe the local jurisdiction via a $25 "temporary permit" to get the concrete truck to my house. Even down here, the lasting cold caused local communities to push out the weight restrictions on the roads. I'm sure that it will take longer in Cook.

 

I'm not sure what business owners will actually do, but I would think some enterprising folks in Cook will try to fill in the gaps. Sure it won't be like shopping at Super One, but there should be places selling staples. Sue and Ron always had staples available at Moosebirds. Maybe the new owners will temporarily expand their grocery line so that people can stay on/around the lake without driving half an hour.

Saw an article (above) saying that Zup's is going to open a small, temporary store next to Subway until the new facility is built. Great news.

I really expected to see a lot of construction going on when I drove through Cook last Friday. Pretty disappointing. That being said the grocery store in Orr served our needs nicely.

Anyone hear anything more concrete or official on Zup’s? Hoping they decide to rebuild, they were missed this year.

COOK – Construction on the new Cook Zup’s store is slated to begin the week of Oct. 20-26. If all goes well, the new store should open on May 5, though Jim Zupancich said he would like to see it open sometime in April. Those hoping for a bigger store will be happy to hear there are plans to make the new building “just a hair larger,” according to Zupancich. A special council meeting will take place at Cook City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. to award bids for the rebuild.

The previous Zup’s store was destroyed by an overnight electrical fire last November. Since then, company officials have been working to bring a full-service grocery store back to the Cook area despite delays due to higher than expected building costs. Zup’s has also made efforts to continue serving the area through a mini-mart, stocked with a sampling of pantry basics and Zup’s specialty meats, which opened in September. In addition, Zup’s has continued delivering groceries to homebound seniors at the Homestead and Pioneer apartment buildings.

The city of Cook has agreed to be responsible for any cost overruns on infrastructure work required for the new building.

The city received a $350,000 IRRR grant for the project and plans to extend some of the water lines around the property and to add additional fire hydrants.

It’s being built. Lots of activity on the site for groundwork currently being done. Prints for bidding are supposed to be out Tuesday

Would be cool to get a periodic picture or two of the construction over time for those who happen to swing through Cook and stop by. Appreciate the info.

Bassbouncer....Not to change the subject, neighbor and I checked out your ice house you're selling. Looks nice. Ron L is my neighbor, talk him into buying it. Btw, do you know how much it weighs? What do you pull it with out on the lake?

It weighed 400# but it sold last Saturday. I bought it and never used it. Was too worried that it would get stuck on the lake in deep snow.

Who knows where the steel is coming from. Things are moving very slowly. I see a couple carpenters on the job but not much getting done in these temps

Doesn't really matter where the steel is from.   We don't make steel in Minnesota anyway, and the price of ore is a global thing.

 

Let's hope it warms up and they can make progress.

Cannot wait for it to be done. Go to the west end of BigV 2-3 times a year and sure nice to be able to pick up a few things during the week.
