Which lowrance locator to buy?

FirstIce

Question

I have been out of the electronics game for awhile and am in need of new graphs for the boat. I used to run 2 five inch screens in the back (one fish locator and one gps). In the front I had a 7" gps/locator combo.

Whats good these days? I dont want to spend a fortune. Looking at HDS Gen3 or Elite TI?

I am not too familiar with Humminbird but they have a wide range of products and have really developed quickly in the marine electronics world.  I am a Lowrance guy and have an HDS 7 unit.  I like it and I am familiar with the operating system because I've been using that brand for 15 years now.  I have heard that the Lowrance Elite series is really nice for the cost - the only obvious downside of buying that instead of an HDS is that the screen is not in high def.  Hopefully some others will chime in about their own personal use with specific products out there.

I have the HDS9 Gen2 and really like it so far. I still have my LCX25C in the boat and the detail from the HDS9 is so much better. I like the fact that I can run split screen with GPS and sonar and both are a nice size. Wish that I could afford a 12. Mine has the down scan but it is not of much use on Lake Superior.

You can get a 9" screen at a pretty reasonable price nowadays. I got a 5" Hook two years ago and wish I would have spent the extra $$$ to go a little bigger with screen size. I have always run Lowrance units. Menus haven't changed that much. Now that isn't to say that Humminbird isn't a good unit, just have more experience with the Lowrance. Go to Scheels, Reed's or any other fine retailer and push buttons on the display, get some feedback and walk out the door with one.

We put a HDS7 Gen 3 unit on our boat this Spring & haven't used it that much but really like it so far. I too have been using Lowrance for some time & am used to the way they work. We have the structure scan/side scan 'ducer with ours, the detail of the high def screen is amazing. I haven't played with the down scan/side scan a lot yet, but will be.

I've always been a lowrance guy too.  I almost switched to hummingbird when they came out with the integrated depth finder/bow mount trolling motor.  Lowrance worked out a deal with Motor Guide and I've been pretty pleased with it.  Love spot lock.  It's also helpful that I can select a type of trolling run.  I think there are around 6 choices and I usually use the gentle S curve.

I have the HDS 9 Gen 3 on transom and put my HDS 8 Gen 1 on the bow of my boat.  They do network so that's nice, but use the Gen 3 almost all of the time.

A buddy had Hummingbird and he really likes it.

Lohmwil makes a good point. If your a Minnkota guy, you should really look at the Birds for integration. It all depends on your  budget and what other equipment you have on your rig.

So, whose spot lock/anchor works better?  Motorguide or the latest Lowrance ipilot?   Not overly impressed by my gen one ipilot with respect to performance on spot lock.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
