Nice picture.  Reminds me of the time we dropped our daughter off at Itasca for Field Camp and drove across Highway 1 to our cabin.     The lights of Cook looked like Hollywood in the distance.   We still talk about that drive, and it was 25 years ago.

There are unicorns and golden walleye awaiting any fisherman brave enough to get there!

I sledded to Black Lake two weeks ago via the creek. There wasn't a ton of snow for going over land and there were definitely areas of thin ice. I had to skip across an open spot as well but made it into Black Lake. There I found areas with real bad slush, so I kept my throttle pinched and did a big loop and got out of there.

Most important for you StateOfHockey, is that you were riding with buddies that could help get you out.

When I first saw the picture I was thinking Black Creek- ding. ding. ding. We have a winner.

Years ago we hiked in off of 24 and found a consistent 6 or 7 feet and not a mark on our locators.  I have to believe that there is winter kill most years up there.

I will probably never drill another hole in Black Lake.

I like reading the current reports and a huge thank you to all that share good information. I will share info thru Private Messages but not so much on the big old internet. Unfortunately with the lack of snow and the Covid-19 running around I have been staying away from the cabin for the most part. Hopefully in the later part of February I can start making more regular visits and start the search for Crappies and Whitefish.

Good Luck - Stay Well

Steve

Are you saying that I should not have posted about the existence of unicorns and golden walleye in Black Lake?!? ?

As a part-time resident on Black Bay, I have drilled a handful of holes over the years in the bay. The ice gets too thick and the fish move out. I would love to actually hear any tales people have of catching a fish in Black Bay (not the river out to the islands - but in Black Bay itself). I suspect that Black Lake is the same.

Found an old thread about Black Lake, which is 6-8ft at the deepest:

Crappies in spring, walleye in the channel and around there also in spring.   I used to try in summer but I eventually concluded it was futile.

Skunked- The areas of Black lakes seemed very similar to Black Bay. Flat 6 to 7 feet deep. I did have a friend years ago take his fish and ski into Black Lake. He said it was interesting getting in there. Do you ever see signs of winter kill in Black Bay? I thought I recalled something about one 7 or 8 years ago.

Good Luck - Enjoy every day

I've never seen tangible signs of winter kill in Black Bay, aside from eagles poaching the few dead fish that you would find after iceout on every lake. I think that most of the fish just move to deeper parts of the lake for the winter. When the lake turns cool in the fall, most of the panfish have already moved to deeper/warmer waters.

Black Lake is a different beast because there is not always a clear path for fish travel in and out. In the spring, Black Creek can be high enough for fish (and even boats) to navigate. However, if fish are caught in Black Lake and unable to return to Vermilion, they might suffer from winter kill. Walleye do swim up into Black Lake to spawn in the spring. I don't know how many stick around there but most if not all come back into the bay, recover, and then move further back into the western bays of Vermilion.

All of that said, Black Lake is connected to Black Bay to the east but also Hoodoo Lake to the west. I have never explored Hoodoo Creek or Hoodoo Lake. I'd be curious if others have traveled through there or know much about Hoodoo Lake.

Hoodoo Lake- My dad said "it has big Northerns in it" This may not be very current as he said that like 40 years ago.

Hopefully I will make it back up for a few weekends. We need snow and lots of it.

Good Luck

Yep, think it was his 2nd biggest, he was pumped.  With COVID shutdowns we have been LOW twice and vermillion 3 times, headed back on weekend.      He's diehard, wants to camp in a portable out there this weekend.

Anyone know where to catch pout.   We have been staying nights and keep lines down 24-7 on the lake while we are there, caught several on LOW but cant seem to find them here.   Maybes its to early yet.    Any location to anyone suggest searching for burbs.

I have caught a couple after dark on Vermilion, that is usually my sign to go in.  I don't know that any location is better for them.  On Red earlier this year I was awoken at 3 am for one on the rattle reel.  In the next 15 minutes I caught a 19" and 21" eye so the walleyes must not discriminate and travel with them to feed.  Hope to find a few eyes on Vermilion this weekend.

Agreed. Temp wasn’t all that cold, but the wind was howling.  My road has already drifted over.  I had 2 tip ups out all day with nothing.  Too shallow as I was hoping for crappies but also the wind would drift snow over them every 30 minutes.  That’s ok though, I was able to get all of my lumber and sheet metal moved from the truck to the land for a summer shed build.  ?

We also were out Thursday/Friday.   Caught a few eaters but mostly nothing was biting.   Should have moved again.

I fished on Saturday.  We caught one whitefish and had one bite jigging and one bite on the tip up.  I was seeing activity on the Livescope but, not many bites.  I think most of them were whitefish as they seemed pretty skittish.  One definitely looked like a walleye from his profile.  I haven't been a very good ice fisherman on Vermilion this year as I have not caught a walleye.  There has to be some fish around Mocc. Point?  I guess I will keep on moving.  I think I will skip this coming weekend as it looks to be pretty cold.

my auger took a digger.   Trying various combinations of drills and shafts for remainder of year since ones i would buy are sold out locally.   Trying a masterforce hammer drill and k drill combo, and also have a Milwaukee drill on the way which should work fine.    Also will try it on my strikemaster chipper shaft, which the motor recently died.    THink i leaned it out to much as it seemed to be running real well, then suddenly sieved up.  Im thinking all will work, just at different speeds.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
