Slow day fishing today. Caught just 5 walleyes with the biggest at 17".  My brother in law caught a 25" eye and that was all. Marking lots of fish but tough bite today. Took another sled ride to Fortune Bay this evening. The lake trails are now marked and there is a lot of slush on the lake.

Has anyone been into Black Bay lately? I'm wondering if my 4-wheeler is going to be dealing with slush this week?

Cigar Guy?

Heading up Thursday. I left 4-5 days ago and Ritchie Bay had a lot of slush along the edge. I haven't been out on the lake yet. I know your neighbor, Chad was up about 10 days ago and went out with a Trax wheeler. Was some slush along the shore where he went out, plus the snow was pretty deep. With the warm weather, I'm sure the snow depth has gone down. So, basically, I'm no help?

SkunkedAgain - last weekend I drove the sled from Stuntz Bay to McKinley Park then to Fortune Bay and found slush in about a dozen spots in that run.  I know that it is not close to where you are but the rest of the lake should be similar.  Where there has been heavy traffic the slush will freeze over fairly quickly.  Untraveled areas will still have slush in spots under the undisturbed snow for several weeks until we get a long run of very cold weather.

Thank you both.

If Chad was up ten days ago, I should be able to follow his tracks which is helpful! You'll probably see me hiking my gear past your place tomorrow afternoon!

Went out from the Landing on Monday by snowmobile,  to our place between Schmidt and Taylor's islands, if you kept moving wasn't too bad,  had some slushy spots.

Good morning!

Looking to get out and about here over the next few days - which may get interesting with the storm impending.

Our place in on Everetts Point, near the channel heading to the Casino.

It’ll be my first time actually getting out fishing this winter-

Open (and welcoming) of any advise as to where a guy may find fish.

I’ve got rainbows, suckers, and waxies- along with a portable & snowmobile, so I’m open to about anything!

Not species specific either- anything that guys are willing to share (even depth or structure generalities) are very appreciated!

Here until Wednesday- thanks!!

(will report back with results of advise to share feedback)

Did the snowmobile club stake the lake trail?

Cobber - I am not a great angler, but I have been doing well for walleyes in 28 fow over mud (I have caught walleye with freshwater shrimp in their mouth).  Rainbows are outperforming chubs and suckers.  Plain hook or a small jig head have both been good.  Seeing you are portable and fishing during the busy time, I would avoid high traffic areas since that can spook fish away.  Good luck and let us know how you do.

Have always heard this to be the case but saw it firsthand on Livescope a couple weeks ago.  While fishing a hole over a deep rock bar, my son slowly drove his snowmobile around the contour of the bar to drill out some new holes, doing a ‘U’ around me.   As he passed to my left a group of fish came screaming through my Livescope screen desperate to evade the noise above them.  As he looped around to my right, another school or perhaps the same school came screaming back thru going the other direction.  We were in deep water (30’) with lots of snow on top.  It was very insightful as to how fish react to snowmobile traffic - and it wasn’t positive.  That Livescope sure has opened my eyes to previously unseen fish behavior under the ice.

I am being extremely careful!!!??

Also there are springs or something around the schmitts / Taylor island area.  Make weak spots.  Guy and a couple kids went through and died, years ago.

I walked from the Landing to Black Bay on Thursday. The lake was in fair shape with the slush only ever going above my boot. When I took my ATV out, it found some more slush but a snowmobile would have cruised over the top. Over course, on my final trip my chain loosened and stripped the drive sprocket. I clicked my way back to the Landing Saturday afternoon with only power to the front wheels and loaded her up for a repair trip home.

Looks like I finally need to invest in a sled again!

What a mess. Added another foot of snow since I was last up 11 days ago. Got the snowmobile stuck going up a small hill in our Soudan lot. Then the sled tipped over going over the road bank, dumping all the contents and breaking the fuel line on my gas auger. Sled tipped over again on the lake spilling everything again. Tons of slush on the lake. Hit one spot that was about 100 yards long. Barely made it out with my old snowmobile. Fortunately the holes in my house barely froze over in 11 days. I drilled a hole outside my house to check the thickness. Had 18" so it increased 4" in 11 days. I drilled this hole on a dry spot of ice and 2" of water poured out onto the ice. Now I have to jack up my house since the floor is in water. Practically nobody out fishing. Fishing has been slow. Have caught 2 dink walleye and a 16" pout in 2 hours. Marking a lot but not much luck. Hopefully the mid day bite will be good. Good luck if you do venture out and be extremely careful on the lake.

Wow Jerkin you deserve a limit just for making it out there after all that. I wish you well and better travels on your way back off!

Is there a road out of McKinley park yet. In am thinking about coming up tomorrow for the day wondering if I could get out fishing with my Polaris ranger. Thinking if there is a owed

road I could drive ranger out on road and find a spot to set up portable. Maybe my thinking is wrong or maybe portable is bad idea if there will be a lot of flooding when I drill holes.

The current warm temps are not helping travel conditions. Only got down to 22 last night. Someone stuck there truck on the plowed road last night but were able to get it out this morning. Hope there was no damage. My house is now sitting in 5" of water. This creates a problem when releasing fish. Twice now I have released a small walleye only to have them begin to swim in this 5" water. Fortunately I was able to get them back down the hole eventually. If they didn't go back down the hole are they considered in my possession?

Scary stuff with all of that slush. How much snow did Vermilion end up getting last weekend? They were calling for 1-2ft, which chased me off of the lake!

My friend said they didn't get much snow on Sunday (couple inches maybe) but the wind was blowing hard as shown in the picture below.  Hopefully my house didn't sink further in the water since I am not going back up until the 16th.

Have not been up since January 5th since going back to work part time after retiring.  I will be up early Friday morning and report on Lake Vermilion conditions if I am not too busy freeing my house from the ice.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
