A cold front moved in which made walleyes a bit more lethargic for a bit so anglers are having to work every fish with nice fish being caught. Resorts primarily fishing 24-32'. Long Point area fishing a little deeper and Rocky Point area finding good keepers near reefs. The shallow morning/evening bite continues to put some walleyes in buckets. Ice roads are maintained everyday by resorts so if issues arise they can be dealt with quickly. Some days jigging working best and others the dead stick or bobber is the better line.  A rattle on jigging line helps coax fish in to bite. Electronics helpful. Typical LOW colors of gold, pink, and other glow colors working best. If not fishing in a resort fish house, auger extension very likely.   Snowmobilers stay on marked trail, big ice chunks off of trail. Ice houses allowed to be left on LOW through March 31.

Rainy River pushing out some nice walleyes in the morning/evening with an occasional sturgeon through the ice.  Local fish houses along the snowmobile trail from Wheeler's Point to Baudette Bay.  Morning, evening bite most effective.

The NW Angle has great ice conditions where resorts have ice roads / trails and fishing is very good.Walleyes in 18-21' with saugers and perch in 25-28'. The trend of jigging with a rattle calling in fish for dead stick much like south shore. Bright and gold rippin raps working well.  Anglers catching slab crappies in holes of 28-32' in Ontario waters. Once you catch your crappies, move on to walleyes or another species as mortality rate is high for released crappies in 25' or deeper.  Snowmobile trails on and around the lake are marked and groomed often.  A complete list of lodging, ice fishing packages and sleeper houses are available at www.fishingminnesota.com/forums/forum/71-lake-of-the-woods-fishing-reports-hunting//Lodging.

The old saying of a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work is true,  but today tested me anyways. First my trailer had a flat. Them my air compessor wouldn't work.  So no way to haul the ATV.  Decided to just walk with the snow free lakes. Get to my spot and my vexilar wouldn't turn on.  I had just charged it 3 days ago.  Caught all kinds of 3-5 inch perch. Tomorrow I'll fix the tire and compessor and get a new battery for vexilar.  Probably go to church to clear my conscious from my frustrations today also.😟  Still better than work though.

We’ve moved 3 times now.  We were too deep up in the bay according to what reports we’ve been seeing.  Plus this cold front has been a bit nasty.  Reports from people on Red were they got slower too with the front.   Pike and perch were fierce though.  Great spot to bring people that just want to catch fish.  But bring lots of minnows.  We had to go get more during our move to Highbanks yesterday.  I never did get to really explore the bay for the better panfish and pike spearing.  Too cold and windy to be casual about anything. we left there with a couple pike over 26 and some 10-12 inch perch.  The couple walleyes we got were 18.5 and 23.5.  I let the 23.5 go but maybe shouldn’t have?  It was the first one.  Protected slot is 18-23 out here.   Went to a proven spot out of Highbanks for last night.  Pike, perch and better walleyes.  Starting to get a decent bucket going with 17.75’s. Otherwise they’ve been in the slot.  They only bite when you’re about buck neked so only 1 pic that I’ll put here.  You’re welcome!

You would be remiss if you don't look at Vortex.  I bow hunt as well and I had a pair of Bushnell something or other and then upgraded to the Vortex.  Amazing how clear and lightweight they are.  I wear them on a bino harness and don't even know they are.  Mine were right around 200 bucks, but worth every penny.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.
