What's the water temp today? Please update

Recommended Posts

Where are the water temps now with all the rain?  Coming up for a week on Friday and want to see what I can find out.  I have had a very poor fishing so far this year.  New to the area and just can't figure it out.  Home is on the west end of big bay.

65 this morning.

Supposed to be in the mid 30s tonight so it's probably gonna lose some more.

Last weekend I still had water temperatures at 72 degrees Friday afternoon September 27th.  On Sunday morning we had 66 degrees in big bay.

Any update on this this week?  Heading back up Tonight.  Hope to see people on the water.  Thanks!

I’m looking for an update as well. Would be nice to see them start to dip into the 50s. Better for fishing and the sauna

57 this morning, dramatic change from last weekend. Fish were biting when you could keep the boat at a steady pace, wind is howling. Lots of small walleye some keepers tossed in.

Jerkin, how was the fishing?

Pretty tough.  Was catching about 2 walleyes per hour and the biggest was only 13".  Back up Thursday so I hope I have better success.

It doesn't look like the lake level has gone up at all. I was up a week ago and struggled to get my boat in and out of the public landing on the west end of Head O Lakes. I used my paddle to push the boat further out to deeper water. I could hear the hull moving over the sandy/muddy bottom near the launch.

41.6°F in Stuntz Bay Thursday morning.  Left my boat in the water to hopefully fish more before the lake freezes.  Caught four 9-11" walleyes in 2½ hours before I gave up due to the strong west wind.  Water level has not gone up more than a couple of inches at the most.  May be a good winter to jack my boathouse out of the water on the deep end.

The water temps on the west end Friday were 45 in HeadOLakes and 44 in the smaller bays.

Had 30 feet of ice out from my Stuntz Bay boathouse on Tuesday afternoon.  None inside the boathouse so I was easily able to remove my boat from the lake (just pushed the ice away in reverse and drove forward through it with my 16 foot aluminum boat).  Didn't hook up my battery so I didn't get the lake temp.  Were lots of boat trailers parked at the landing.  Hope they get off the lake easily.  Will be ice fishing in 4 weeks.

That's good news. I haven't seen any ice in Black Bay yet, but it looks like the small bays should start to freeze up this weekend. Hopefully we make some ice next week.

Below is the forecast for Cook. We should have temps mostly below zero . The bottom section below shows that it should not be windy, and no snow is predicted. All good signs for making ice.

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.

Checked the ice at McKinley Park Monday (Dec. 2)  afternoon.  There was quite a bit of open water before Birch Island and I found only 2-3 inches of ice 10 yards out from the landing.  If the lake doesn't freeze over tonight it may not happen until Thursday morning after the snow stops and the wind dies down.  I was hoping to walk out fishing Thursday, but I may wait until Friday to be safer.  To be very safe I may just wait until next Monday (Dec. 9).  The winter is long.  No need to rush it.

Tamarack on Winnie opened to foot and ATV travel.  Stating a real possibility of UTV travel by this weekend.   Crazy MN weather.

I can confirm that all of the ponds, cattail swamps, and ditches are froze solid now to walk on.  I went pheasant hunting again on Saturday afternoon with a friend and we got 3 roosters.  Could not get the 4th (he missed a couple).  One spot had about 30 birds but they were on a field edge and getting up out of range.  I'll be approaching that spot next time from another angle.   There is just a dusting of fresh snow on the ground this morning which would make for a great hunt today.
