I managed to get a couple of days off, so plan on pulling my wheelhouse up to LOW (Wheeler's Point) Wednesday morning.

Reports have been kinda sparse, so am wondering what the latest and greatest is? Don't expect your Honey Hole spot, just general locations, ice and lake travel conditions, etc, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

'Pout

The 'Pout bite has been great :P

Adrian's has made yet another road to the east of the 2 previous, now abandoned, roads.  The new road is a bit rough for my liking but take it slower and no problems.  The good part about it is that the little snow that is out there (maybe an inch or two) is rock hard and you can now drive anywhere you want.  I saw 1 ton diesel trucks pulling wheel houses across the white and I doubt anyone was even in 4 wheel drive, its just not needed.  We can all spread out, anywhere we want.

BTW, stay off the old plowed roads where the ice looks smooth.  Some of them had a foot or so of water on them before it cooled off again and as of yesterday they were not all frozen back down to the original ice. I saw one truck got a little surprise.  Again take it slow and pay attention and you can go anywhere.

Good luck with those 'pout!

Thanks RR. How far out are most people fishing?

Posted

We did not go all the way out this weekend so I can't say for sure where 'most' were fishing.  Since you can literally go anywhere, there were no real "concentrations" of houses that I saw.  Everyone was spread out real nice except I did see quite a few houses fishing in closer to Pine, near the snowmobile trail, based on the distance (maybe a mile or mile and a half out?) I would guess they were "shallow" and not out to the basin.  Distance can be tough to judge so this is my approximation.

Some friends road sleds WAY north and were surprised that shortly after they set up a suburban came from the south and fished near them.  Like I was saying people are spread out.

Adrian's road now only goes out 11.5 vs. the 16 miles they were out a week ago.

Good Luck!

I hope to sneak another quick trip in this week to Wheeler's Point area.

How's the ice and are you still going out 16 miles or are the fish moving in closer?

Thanks

We covered ALOT of areas yesterday from the Ontario line to the Manitoba line and points between.  Ice was clear, hard & thick everywhere we fished.  2' thick on the east side and almost 3' on the west.  There are plenty of pressure ridges and cracks out there and some run for many miles.  I heard the dams are wide open in Int'l Falls and that will make the ice move.

i also heard the landings are starting to deteriorate quickly.  We flew yesterday so I can't tell you about the landings & roads.

I got on at Adrian's and it was still good Friday afternoon but lots of water on the road with all the rain.  With all the water and traffic they might not last long depending on weather.  I was out about 17 miles and had more than 3 feet of clear ice with about 2 inches of water on top.

Fishing was good with slow to fast periods during the day.  Mornings were slow for me but good midday bite with flurries of action right up to dark.

It's not the ice that's the problem. It's the landings. I'd imagine walking if the sun comes out, landings are going to disintegrate... Very sketchy. I fished this week, unable to cross pressure ridges. Caught NOTHING. Just my experience.. I heard some caught.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. After the warm weather today, I will play it by ear.

On the positive side, I may be able to go open water fishing instead.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
