Truck thru the ice on Gray's Bay Lake Minnetonka

Recommended Posts

Be careful out there, a truck went through this afternoon on grays bay in Minnetonka.  I fished a lake last weekend with over 20" of ice but found another with only 12". Ice has been sketchy this year so don't take it for granted.

From another picture I saw, it did look like the truck was in front of the marina. Vehicles have been falling through the ice in that area (in front of the bridge) since I started ice fishing in the mid-60's. When will people learn to stay away from bridges, channels, and the like??

Actually, no, it was right at the winter access. I was out there this morning and couldn't believe it.

WOW! I haven't fished Grays Bay since I was a kid; don't ever recall an ice issue there. I had planned on checking the access to another bay this afternoon before venturing out tomorrow early morning in the dark. That sounds like an even better plan now.

I've been on Gray's a few times this winter, ice has always been no different than Wayzata.  The last time I was there was a little over a week ago.  Very weird, the access had looked fine.

Took a drive over to Grays bay this afternoon, couple of other guys there taking pictures.  Truck did go through at the winter launch.  You can see how the combination of the current at the bridge, and the bubbler will play havoc with this access in the future.  If the access was on the north end of the parking lot, it might have not happened.

Then I ran over to Wayzata, and ended up chatting with the Sheriff regarding what happened over there.   Apparently, the guy didn't know the lake, and tried to drive into those lagoons by the beach... Of course, there is always current there.  What a dope.

There is a HUGE heave in front of the beach, you have to drive down the beach in order to access the lake with a wheeler or car right now.

I looked at the access to Carson's Bay by the bridge this afternoon and it's really starting to look dicey. Trucks were still using it. I was planning on going out tomorrow morning, but decided against it after looking at the access. Just not willing to take a chance. A couple years ago I was at that access and watched a guy with a pickup drop a front wheel in a hole right there.

This ice is going fast. Everywhere is getting bad. There is wide open water  under The bridge you drive over by North arm. Still drove out but probably for the last time.

I drove my 1/2 ton out on Grays Bay right over the spot just a few days before the guy dropped through this past week.

I went out of Navarre this morning with the wheeler.

Looking at the landing in the dark by the sheriff station I would have been a little tense driving my truck on there. On the way back early afternoon, it looked a little better, except the first 6 feet or so which is wet and dark. I did see a 1/2 ton pickup, an escalade and a suburban drive through the dark looking water and slurry onto good ice.

The ice out on the lake is still solid in most places, but there are some big pressure cracks and heaves that go a long ways across several of the bays, which can, and does regularly happen out on Minnetonka, not to mention other of our bigger lakes.

Going across country in the dark, even with a wheeler, it would be a good idea to take it slow.

If anyone reading this has a house still out there, or knows someone who does I would consider pulling it before it hits the 50s by the end of the week.

The sun is getting noticeably stronger by afternoon, and with no snow on the lake it will start heating up the lake floor and melting the ice from the bottom.

Anyone been by any of the bays today by chance?  Is anyone walking out, or is it done?  Have an afternoon open tomorrow.

Thanks.

PS, will be wearing a life jacket, if I even hear some feedback.

Drove by Grays Bay this morning. The one and only house left has now partially fell thru. Not sure how this one is coming out.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.
