Here's a few I got the other night... 26.5" and 24". Made the mistake of eating the big one. Think I'll stick to smaller cats from now on. Haha...

GF got her first channel cat last week... It was nice, too. Didn't measure or weight, but I'd guess maybe 6-7lbs?

Got this fatty night before last. Like my old school smelting net? I've been using it because it had a 6ft handle and makes thinks easy in precarious shore scenarios.

Went and tried a new spot... 3 snacky cats. One of them took my rod straight into the river and I had to dive in after it. Good times.

Caught a fatty the other night... 26.5". Looked preggo so I tossed it back. Got it from a bridge at night, was sure it was a 20lb cat until it was out of the water. Somehow snapped a 50lb mono leader at the snell a split second before my buddy got it in the net. Was pretty wild. Cats are way too much fun!

Cats are fun to catch & fight hard, but I have been unable to make them into something truly worth eating.  I grew up catching channel cats in SDakota and there were very good.  The cats out of the MIssissippi in the Little Falls area consistently have a pronounced algae-muck-weedy bad flavor.  Occasionally, some walleyes late summer have the same from this section of the river.

I have tried removing the fatty areas, dark red-colored meat, soaking them in buttermilk for extended periods and other methods to reduce this off-flavor.  Doing each of these has improved them, but not reduced the bad taste significantly or eliminated it.  Does anybody have any other suggestions on how to eliminate this bad flavor?

Teal i have the same experience with cats in the LF area, really the only place i fish for them.  I figured i was just doing it wrong!

I really like the walleyes from this stretch however, never a bad one!

Finally got my oldest son (5 years old) out for his first overnight cat fishing adventure.  I was surprised how well he handled the wait in between bites.  After we caught the first fish he wanted to try and hold it.  Right when he got close to it :wham:, tail slap right in the face.  He thought it was hilarious and so did I!  We managed to catch quite a few fish ranging from 5 to 14Lbs.  He can't wait to go back out.  It's great feeling to see that excitement and be able to share a passion of mine with him.  Looks like I'll have a kitty chasing partner from here on out!!!

Anyfish2...I have had a number of walleyes in the Little Falls area that had the same algae type flavor. This has only been in late summer and is only occasional.  They have tended to be larger in the 20 + inch range. They all had very red colorization in the rib meat area. Basically inedible. I had always thought it was something they were eating. The flavor is identical to the catfish.

maybe it is because it catch small ones!!

Well, this one is only about a 1/4 the size of the one down in the cities.  And if you don't have $12,000 to $120,000 to buy a ATV, boat or camper. For the $10 to get in and $3.50 to park.  It can be fun to have a hotdog, snag some freebie pens, cozies and candy and watch the kids fish!   😉

so what kind of stuff do they have at that sportsman show?????   i keep thinkin one day i should go to it....but never do. went once years back.

I'll have to say I was getting a little bummed out watching the kids fish the pond at the show yesterday. One little kid with his dad hooked 3 fish and never got a one in! One teen girl had probably the biggest in the tank on and it broke her off!  With the smooth barbless hooks and the Walmart 1lb line. It's freeking worst then a carnival game on the midway!  Great way to get kids involved! 😒

Back in the 70s when a bunch of us early teenagers would go to the SportShow, we figured out the flies never got down to the trout with all the moving water. A little split shot solved that problem. 😆

Nice looking pictures. Makes me want to jump on the snowmobile.

Friday was a beautiful day on Vermilion.  The fresh snow and high winds made pretty drifts on the lake, as long as you weren't trying to travel off plowed roads.  Watched a large 4x4 truck travel off road and it hit some very large drifts, but didn't get stuck.  Not too many houses were left but many new ones were being pulled out onto the lake for the weekend.  Was a nice view at dark seeing all the lights on the lake.   Fishing was average.  I had to shovel snow off of our mobile home roof so I didn't get out until 10am.  Was a decent bite at 11am, and then from 330-415pm, but other than that it was very quiet for me.  Vermilion Fuel and Food finally had shiners so I tried those and caught most of my fish on them.   Good luck fishing, be very courteous if you use plowed roads, and be careful if you travel off road.

We went from no snow to enough quickly. I will have to go check out the lakes with updates on which ones have plowed roads around. Be safe and bring a shovel.

Last Friday, it was still pretty busy for a week day.   I've gotten a few out of there over the years.

A few years ago when my son and wife came over to watch the game!

I mean I no longer fish for trout, I was cured of that mental illness
