Fished a bit

Recommended Posts

Fished Pike Bay this afternoon and did ok, caught 3 walters and a ton of perch that we sorted through, ended up with a half a dozen solid keepers. Didn't move, set up in 19' and stayed there all day. Lots of folks out there tonight enjoying this beautiful weather.

Hey Jim,

Wondering if I you could help me out a bit with some info.  I will be heading to Cass on the 26th with a group of friends and this is the first time that I will be on Cass ice fishing.  Been trying to look around on the net for info on the lake but not coming up with much.  Just curious if there is a certain color/s that work better than others on Cass.  We are going to be staying at Cass Lodge and renting some day houses so I am assuming that they will have us in somewhat of the right location for fish.  Trying to get a better picture on needed tackle.  Any info would be great.

This is my second winter over here in Cass so I'm not completely confident in my ability to give info on Cass lol. I fish Pike Bay and Winnie mostly, but I will see what I can gather from some friends and get back to you. One more week and you'll be in God's country!

Flash, welcome to FM!

I asked a coworker this morning about Cass for you.  He has a cabin there and fishes it weekly year round.

As far as colors go, he said natural colors.  Gold, silver, browns, oranges as well as glow green are the best in that order. Reds, chartreuse and red/pink glows are lowest on the list.

Obviously transition areas tend to be the best locations.  Deep vs shallow tends to be day to day season long.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you for the info, that helps me a lot.  One last question, is there a night/evening bite that is worth staying out on the lake for?  This is the 3rd year for this trip with this group and we have been trying different lakes based on price/accommodations and fun.  Lake of the Woods and Winne were the last 2 years and so far each has not been a complete bust.  Last time I was on Cass, I was putting a Tourney on but was open water and wasn't able to fish it, but I do remember that it was a very good 2 days as far as the fishing goes.  So I am super excited to get up there and get some lines wet.  Again thank you both for the info.

I remember someone way back in the HSO/Fishingminnesota days caught this super huge walleye at night out on Cass. Some fish or tales of fish just stick with you, that was one of them. I've been thinking on which body of water I can hit around here after work for night bite. Cass crossed my mind today so I might give that a whirl sometime this week while we have this killer warm spell.  Keep in touch on here man, maybe we can dial them in.

I did a little research at previous posts, we've got plenty here in the Cass Lake threads. You can go back a decade or more even and read through the reports when more guides and resorts were utilizing this forum.  I read through a few winter reports and I feel quite a bit smarter!

It sounds like there definitely can be a worthwhile night bite.  The type of structure seems to dictate how good it can be.

"Smaller" humps, or structure by itself seems to produce better then the breaklines along the numerous flats.  It seems "smaller" structure topping out 10 to 15 feet surrounded be deeper water is best.

Good luck, and report back.

So according to what the resort is saying it sounds like the evening bite is/has been a bit better than the day bite.  We will find out for sure this weekend though.  Got loaded up on the required colors so hopefully I will be able to update with our abundant success after the weekend.  Hopefully my liver is up to the challenge and the fishing gods are with us.  Cant wait to get up there and get some lines wet.

Me and the girlfriend went out and jigged for pout for a while last night with no luck, don't know much about the pout out on Cass but did a little research and recon on what to look for out there and set up in 28' of water next to even deeper water. We jigged for an hour or so and only saw a couple of fish show up, but no takers.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
