Went fishing with my boss again and today the fish bit like crazy but much smaller fish. I kept 5 keepers so I could get my grandma a fish dinner. No fish over 8 inches today one the was almost the went in the bucket. Ice was 7-7.5 inches and the crowds were crazy.

I promised my grandpa that once he was gone I would still bring my grandma some fresh fish.

?i did that also after my papa passed away. She really enjoyed them. They had to be cleaned whole. No fillets.

What has been working is a kichler Custom black ice rod with black Betty reel with 3 pound test Berkeley ice line in clear. 3 mm gold jig with mayfly nymph.

Way to go bud! That bite is extreme ! crazy the amount of fish I iced other day. Have to admit they were some of the best eating fish I've had. For myself small plastics,  Panfish PIrates RIppers in natural colors were the ticket on a 4 mm amped outdoors gold Tungsten.

Got to test out the new Kichler Custom black ice. It was great the fish were tight lipped but my dad and I kept 7 for his dinner. Went to friends to make the lite flight work on my clam drill plate and I am excited to see how it works. Ice varied from 6-8 inches and got slushy after cutting holes. I did not take photos today

So here is the deal with the lite flight it requires a larger bolt than the plate has, so you will have to have a larger hole to attach it.

Well with the modification a friend did to my extension the lite flight on the clam drill plate was awesome. I went to one of my favorite local lakes and put the hurt to some gills and crappies. Nothing huge but enough between 7-8 inches for gills and crappies from 9-10.5 to keep me busy for the 45 minutes I was out. 18-21 feet of water using the Kichler Custom black ice with a 4 mm wonder bread colored jig with my all time favorite maki mino in white. Fishing in an 8 inch hole is like fishing in Lake Superior compared to the 6 inch hole.

Fished Baxter for the first time. Upon arrival I discovered that I lost my winter tackle box ? so I was extremely limited with jig selection. Found a bunch of little guys...would be a good lake to take the kids.

That lake runs in cycles about every 5 years it has keepers then they fish it so hard. I have pulled some dandies out of Baxter over the years.

I got on to a decent spring crappie bite out there about 5 years ago too.  Quite a few 10-12 inchers and several 13+.  Went back a week later and there was about 8 boats in there fishing for them.  Haven't been back there since, the access is junk.  There's no concrete, no dock, virtually no parking, trees all over, and its a mud hole after it rains.

Yep it’s not the best access but it’s still a nice little lake.

I should add some details 19-23 feet of water. 4mm wonder bread jig with a white with red flake maki mino. Until I was bit off then I struggled until I went to the old trusty  3 mm gold jig with a mayfly. I caught a lot of keepers but only need a few.

Took my old man fishing today and ran into @tview. Fishing was pretty good for me. 4 mm kenders jig in multi color metallic with a maki mino in white. The Kichler custom was key to my success I really like these rods. Once we can drive out I am going to see if I can get Allen come to the get together to talk about rods with those who might be interested. Today I never used the 3 mm jig set up. My dad ended up with 14 gills and 6 crappies and I had 10 crappies and 9 gills.

Yah, no kidding!  Heading the Winnie this weekend.  Wife signed us up for a GTG for a wheelhouse group.  About 100 confirmed attendance. ?

The most important thing I packed was the 4 wheeler! ?

Hit my go to spot for some fish and the lake had a lot of people fishing the deep basin holes. Slush was not bad but once I got my grid drilled out it started to get a little slushy and 9-11 inches of ice. If you measured to the top of the snow you had 13 but that top 2 or 3 inches is snow and slush. The best bait was a maki mino on a 4 mm jig. Depth was 19-23 feet and away from the city that is forming. I ended up with 8 keeper crappies and released a 12.25 and 9 keeper bluegills 7.25-8 inches. Lost a nice walleye as it rolled and my 3 pound test was no match for those gills. I did stop some guy who was going to drive his truck out with a wheelhouse.

I drove by Baxter and Blue today. Couldn't believe there was a van and a truck that drove out on Blue. Especially with the weather we've had.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
