I saw 52 deer in 6.5 days of hunting last week in zone 225 northeast of Princeton.  Its by far the most deer I've seen in a season, by more than double.  16 of those deer were bucks.  Unfortunately, 15 of those bucks were dinks being 6 pointers or smaller.  I only saw one sizable buck that appeared to be a big 8 or 10 pointer briefly as it was bounding through brush/timber behind me, and it did not present a shot.  I saw several mature does with triplet fawns.  I did fill a bonus antlerless tag with a plump corn fed doe on opening morning for the freezer.

I also saw about 60 wild turkeys and too many pheasants to count.  Its obvious to me that the wildlife is flourishing like I've never seen before.  I've hunted Central MN for 25-30 years and its never been like this on all fronts with the wildlife.  One morning I thought a flock of about 40 mallards landed on the field and as it got brighter, I realized they were all pheasants, not ducks.

I think it had to be the fake winter we had.  There's no other explanation for the explosion in wildlife.

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?

I really like it. I do like the gas operated semis as they reduce recoil

On waterfowling pages that Stoeger M3000 gets mentioned a lot.  The Cerakote finish is sweet too.

I used to run an auto and this is the truest statement. I also realized the importance of good cleaner and lube. The cheap stuff really holds dirt. A well cleaned gas gun can operate sub zero Temps. Even an interia driven auto dirty with bad lubricants can fail at 70 degrees.

Not to worry iffen you don’t go out in the cold!  Nyuk nyuk….

Complaints seemed to come from young guys that never cleaned their guns and ran cases of shells through em.  I know of a couple Brownings and Bennellis that have done the same.

Sometime new, out of the box guns will jam cuz there’s still cozmolene in the action from the factory.  One buddy of mine had to scrape his Benelli out with a screw driver to get it cycle properly.

I went pheasant hunting for the first time this season on Friday.  Started at 11am, and finished by 11:43 at the first spot.  Raised 13, 5 of which were roosters.  They were all getting up close and dumb.  The entire countryside is a complete mudhole.  Sticky, thick, wet mud and standing water in all the ditches and low lying areas.  I'm looking forward to all of this hardening up good with colder weather soon.

I use a Benelli that's inertia-driven.  Far less debris for cleaner operation than shooting a gas operated autoloader.

This " guns will jam cuz there’s still cozmolene in the action from the factory"  is one of the reviews I read the most of.

I went on Wed early afternoon and got a couple more dumb ones at the first spot.  Everything has hardened up good now so its much easier walking than the mudhole last time.  Low lying areas with water had enough ice to hold the dog, but not me.  There's a lot of birds out there.  Maybe the most I've seen since I've had this dog, and she is 12 years old.

Been checking ice but most lakes still have some open water due to wind. I will be muzzleloader hunting for a bit seeing the ice isn’t ready.

In my area there has some guys out on the ice.  It sounds like they are fishing on 3" inches of ice. There was two groups out here on star last night.

I can confirm that all of the ponds, cattail swamps, and ditches are froze solid now to walk on.  I went pheasant hunting again on Saturday afternoon with a friend and we got 3 roosters.  Could not get the 4th (he missed a couple).  One spot had about 30 birds but they were on a field edge and getting up out of range.  I'll be approaching that spot next time from another angle.

There is just a dusting of fresh snow on the ground this morning which would make for a great hunt today.

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆
    • Wanderer
I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
