Probably, my first time fishing in the area was likely at age two so 34 years ago

👍 well, lets see here, i'm 65 years experienced. my parents bought the cabin in 1965, so i started fishing up there when i was 6 years old.........that would be 59 years ago!!!!! but i love it up there. most times, unless i got to the bigger lakes in the area, there might only be 1 maybe 2 other fishhouses or boats on it. especially now that i'm retired and fish during the week!!!! and now i've been trying to hit a new lake or 2 every summer!!!!!

that is a problem of sorts...i grew up, and lived all my life within 5 miles of the horseshoe chain of lakes......and i dont no crap about them. yea i fish it in the winter now and then but i honestly dont know the lakes well. when i go out i just kinda go where others are. i do know what they catch in some of the areas so. i know the lakes up by the cabin wayyyy more then where i live.🤔

then to compound that..wife and i had a perny site camper near new london.......lotz of lakes there........and i got to know them better then the lakes out my front door.🥴

Went out antiquing with wife yesterday and she found all kinds off stuff I picked up a redhead wood duck decoy. I like to find different ducks and not spend much on them. I did notice antler’s were every expensive.

Today is one of those days that we’ll hopefully be heading home early, fishing wise.

Still been a good time out here but the bite off. Way off.  Only hooked about 1 in 10 seen.  Same spot as last time.  We were going to move but got too caught up in the festivities and ran out of time.

Vendor row was surprisingly enjoyable.  We bought more than we thought we would.  I got a set of back up plans for getting unstuck.  I know I’ll use them!

The worst part of the whole deal was they DID bring out a wheelhouse for promotion from Smokey Hills.  The Hardwater Life Special Edition Ice Castle. My wife was gaga over it.  Says “That’s the one!”  Uugghhh!!!!  Can only order right now - and no, we didn’t, but now she’s laser focused.

*NOTE* This post was interrupted by a couple walleyes. 😉  One ate and one didn’t.

Bucknahalf.  Dunno if that was good but it was a 15% discount and honestly the first time I’ve seen em.  Company from Canada.  I was told they can’t put these in a retail store because of the border??? IDK????  So no idea if they’re available in St. Cloud.

The best luck I could have with that wheelhouse is if it turned into a boat instead!  Again, no deal was made!  But thanks anyway!!!

same here in SD yesterday was beautiful low 30’s, sunny no wind and barometer just absolutely  bottomed out. Fish were very negative and skittish. Fished all day with only one 13” perch to show for it.

moved to another lake right at golden hour to fish walleye over night. Only one 15”er so far on a rattle reel.  Any jigging they do a 180 and gone. Seeing fish on livescope and they are pretty tight lipped. Hopefully sun up is more productive. Might be a long drive home today with this weather. At least I didn’t waste yesterday watching the Vikings 😀

The “Key” to understanding that he was referring to the Big Grippers is to not let the sun bake yer head too much!

Hope you’re enjoying your trip!

Went to Ottertail County last weekend and hit 5 lakes and struck out on all 5. Tried shallow mid range and deep all with the same results little 5-6 inch gills. I did manage 1 keeper crappie 11 incher but that was it. I was marking fish they would not bite. Tried plastics, jigs, and minnow style baits. A friend tried euros, waxies, and minnows. I cut a pile of holes went through both 9 amp and the 6 batteries and even recharged the 9 to use again on the lake.

I’m giving the one set of Big Grippers a B rating so far in deep snow on the ice.  Once the frame of the truck starts pushing snow, you can be stopped.  Trying to get back out, if you let the tires spin too much, you can actually dig down into the ice and stay stuck.

My buddy was stuck with his house, his other buddy got stuck trying to get him out.  I joined when they were both planted.  It took all 3 trucks to get truck/house combo freed up again.  Not really that big of deal, almost kinda fun.  But the grippers did help and my truck wore them until we got back to the access to leave for home.

Another pair on the fronts might be the big game changer.  Super easy on and off process.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
