Moose's Report - Cambridge-Elk River-Foley-Milaca-Mora-Ogilvie Fishing Reports

We had same problem out here on Star. technically the lake is in the road right a way. People would park on both sides of the road and load atv's and gear blocking the road. The small cabin next to it has a port a poty and people were using it. The county put up sings but that didn't help.

The last straw was a group of fishermen was loaded and loading up when  a older lady wanted by and the out come was not good. Now there is a gate across that spot.

Took a friends kid out and he out fished me. It was close but he did catch more than me. We kept some for a fish fry . We fished from 10:30 to 3:30. I used plastics and jigging spoons with no bait and he use a jigging spoon with euros.

Yesterday, I finally burnt up my drill  after 50 or more holes. Now with that said I cut a lot of holes compared to most anglers. Don’t worry DCD999 is order and  should be showing up this week .

Now for the goods the pin head minnow jig is still working very well.  I was fishing with my bosses dad who met me on the lake and I even got my dad away from making Baby Beavers 🦫 to go fishing. My bosses dad went home with 13 keeper gills and my dad went home with enough fish to have a fish fry today for the Baby Beaver Bait staff. Then riverrat316 showed up for some fun, but the three guys I was fishing with complained that they were not catching fish as good as me.

key tips 3 pound test line, 1/16 oz pinhead minnow and the custom rod my nephew made for me. I also had my Kichler custom rigged up with 3 pound test, a 4 mm gold jig with a you a white and red flaked maki mino I use the second set up after I picked off the aggressive fish first.

the depth was 20-22 feet away from the crowd. 17-20 inches of ice.

Took my brother and cousin out looking for eyes and I put em on some eyes. Now I will try some night fishing. Finding a small point with no people around might have made the difference.

Ok details from last weekend fished 16-19 feet of water. The bait I did best on was 4 mm jig in gold with a maki mino white with red flakes. I also did well with pinhead minnow jig. It was mostly bluegills, but I did catch a number of small crappies which is great to see some small fish again.

Last night for the crappies a 1/8 oZ buckshot spoon tipped with a crappie minnow head, but the best was a 4mm tungsten jig the glowed with maki mino in glow color. Depth was 25-28 feet please remember when fishing deep water these fish don’t release well, so keep the fish you catch and as they will swim away but they will die.

Well I am stuck at home this weekend as we are down to one vehicle. The truck blew a brake line and my car has a fuel regulator sensor out. Neither will be fixed until Tuesday. So please post some fish pictures for me. Then this week at work we had a gas leak shut us down for a day and half. We did get pizza 🍕 today so I guess that made up for it.

I went to that and saw that booth.  Didn't buy any though.

The Northwest Sportshow and the Deer & Turkey Classic are both next weekend.  I can't do both and I'm leaning towards the Northwest Sportshow at the Convention Center.  Good to have all these expos and shows back to attend.  Gets me in the mood for turkey hunting and spring crappie fishing.

I hope to be on the ice next weekend for at least one more trip with the truck. The fish were deeper than I expected.

Stop by Limestone to take a look last weekend.  I just hope the one truck out there even got off the Ice.  The landing was bad. 😯

Buddy of mine just let me know about Limestone this week. Gonna try it out in that southern bowl with the yak for some bass when the season opens. Ever try it for bass?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
