Anyone hear of any chances that a road will be open for lightweight SUV's by Christmas time??

When I left last weekend the resorts were all running theirs and hauling houses, 10 in of ice. Hoping maybe at 12in of ice it would open up a bit..... crossing my fingers real tight. Hoping to get the kids involved during the next visit, SUV travel is a bit easier vs four wheelers and sleds.

Bueller??

Most likely better to call Adrian's or other lake road proprietors unless you just want rampant speculation.

Rampant speculation can be fun! But thank you, to clarify, legitimately wondering if anyone has actually heard anything from a reputable source or resort. Personal experience of ice condition/depth? What are we currently seeing on the lake? that type of thing... helps fuel my excitement :D

I will certainly update upon my arrival on Dec 26 and am prepared to go without, just would LOVE to get the kids out in an SUV situation vs other options.

Good times will result regardless

It's not the resort that you want the report from. Not sure if Ken Mark or the Kevin have a report on the website or not... could check the bug and retreat to see what they are saying, but I did find this...IMG_4377.PNG

I called Adriann's to see the odds of them letting half tons out next week pulling a wheel house - the response I got was, no.

Half tons without houses - possibly, depending on how the snow impacts things. But not pulling wheel houses.

Guess the wheeler will be making the trip again this year...

Wheeler or a lightweight SUV -

That's what our  "four wheeler" is -  A 2000 Jeep Cherokee! Lightest SUV I can find that can still haul some people with an inline v6 bullet proof engine! Threw some chains on him and nicknamed it LEEEEROOOY JENKINS!!!! He aint pretty, but its cheaper and easier to use than a four wheeler!

THUMBS UP! LETS DO THIS!!

We have an all seasons trailer/fish house. Very lightweight. Absolutely awesome. 6x15. Worst case I will pull that with the wheeler while the kids follow in the SUV.

Roads will still make ice as they get plowed. I just plan to keep to the road system... for now ;) I am fishing every day from Dec 26 - Jan 2. Guaranteed things will open up a bit during that week, its getting cold again. Snow or not. There will be ice that is made. We have two sleds, a wheeler, LEROY, and if things advance and permit, we have a suburban with tracks on it. GAME ON

I can update ice conditions every day for that week easily if anyone is interested. SUV season is here, half tons not so much.

I plan on the Honda for sure. Have yet to decide on the munchkin. If I leave that home and just use the 949 I could use the little trailer to haul gear. Fishing will be had. Of coarse if Mr S comes to play we may need to make two trips :P

Agreed - has been my wish since the moment I purchased him. But am struggling to get the "partners" to agree. It is the future plan in my books.

I'm on the lake right now. 12in of ice. I'm looking at wheelhouses pulled by SUVs  little crazy in my books. But they are doing it. Chains are a must. Never would have made it without chains. Yesterday several roads were only allowing wheelers and sleds. Not sure where all these trucks and wheelhouses came from.... Extremely poor fishing.

Almost needed the extension on the augur, was right to the power head. No walleye but sent my buddy home with 10 bluegills. Could drive everywhere in 4 wheel drive just had to avoid the drifts

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.
