2017 Vermilion Ice fishing reoprts and ice conditions

Recommended Posts

It appears that we will have a very late start to this winters ice fishing on Vermilion.

Very little ice anywhere that I checked this morning!

Pike bay is mostly ice covered but that ice is very thin. Big Bay and other bays that I checked were still wide open.

Most bays should freeze over real quick in the next 10 days or so with the way the forecast looks.. (trying to be optimistic at least)

I think Vermilion will freeze over this Friday, December 9; could be either morning or evening.  Looks like it is setting up to be very good ice this year as the temps will be very cold for over 8 straight days with little snowfall.  I will be up Thursday-Saturday, but don't think it will be safe to walk on by then.  Well, I guess I'll finish my new semi-portable fish house in Soudan this weekend.

as of 12/5 on the West end many small bays were wide open. Water levels are very high in the local rivers, swamps and I am guessing the lake. It is information that I received from a relative last night.

Be safe

Embarrass 10-day forecast shows starting Monday it won't get above zero through the end of the 10-day (Thursday).  So should make some ice.

I sure am ready for that!

Snowing and blowing here this morning again! Only 10 degrees though so we should be making some ice! Probably not good ice though!

I saw some guys out fishing Robinson lake off of 169 west of Ely yesterday when I went driving by. Didn't stop to check the ice but with all the lakes that still have open water I'm guessing it couldn't have been very thick.

Quick question, we have never come up in the winter, but it's my understanding the ice is usually questionable around Oak Narrows and Timbuktu. Does anyone know what the ice is usually like in Birch Narrows (West Hinsdale) and Smarts Bay (SW area Hinsdale) around the Retreat Lodge Area which is where our island property is.

Thanks for any insight

PSU,

I would certainly be careful in the narrows! Especially early in the winter season.

I checked the ice at McKinley Landing and at Stuntz Bay Landing this morning.

Mckinley was iced over out as far as Birch Island and over to Echo Point.

That ice had broken up and re-frozen. Was probably not very thick either.

Stuntz looked like the main shallow bay was probably fairly safe to walk on but the narrows looked like it was barely frozen over.

Thanks Cliff! I've been very closely monitoring Pike Bay the last few weeks I'm not far from you as the crow flies right on the bay. Still sitting at 4-5 inches of ALL refroze slush. No good ice. It's flooding over pretty good with 1-3 inches water with the couple inches snow still on top. Hopefully the cold penetrates that snow and gets things going so I can run the sled right up the bay to McKinley by next weekend.

I took a drive past McKinley and Stuntz this afternoon again.

I did not see anything that looked like open water out there! No fishermen out there yet either!

Should be safe to at least walk out in a couple of days!:D

Was up finishing my semi-portable fish house and monitoring the freezing of Vermilion.  McKinley Park pictures below are sequential; Thursday afternoon wide open, Friday morning open in the middle of Big Bay, Friday afternoon about ½" ice at shore possibly still open in the middle, Saturday morning 1½" at the shore and all of Big Bay appeared to be frozen.  Obviously I didn't make it out fishing, but will be back up Thursday morning and will definitely go out (walking and wearing a life jacket just to be safe until I've verified safe ice).  Be safe and good luck.

The ice was 2.5" in Niles Bay on Sat eve.  Had 4-5" on a smaller local lake today, which we fished.  She was sure making ice judging by all the cracking.  We took all the necessary safety precautions, but still a little unnerving being the first ones to venture out.

Hey Guys i have fish out of Timbuktu in the summer a few times. Were is the best and easiest access for ice fishing? We will have to walk out or mite have a utv with not sure. Thanks for the help.

The easiest access on the East end of the lake is either McKinley Park or Stuntz Bay. Both landing are usually plowed in the winter.

Not sure about access on the West end.

Ice conditions South end of Pike Bay: 5-7 inches with a little flooding occurring because of the 3-6 inches of fluffy snow insulating on top.

Cliff or others: Are you aware of when the local club usually stakes the snowmobile trails on the lake?

Heading up the week between Christmas and New Year's.  Has anyone been out on Frazer or Wakemup?

Didn't have much luck last year my only time (same week), but used to that from summers.  Sounds like West side is slower than East usually anyway, correct?

S.M.

The snowmobile routes will get marked as soon as the club decides that the ice is safe enough for travel, which should be very soon!

I had 7" to 8"  of solid ice on Big Bay today. (Drove my 4-wheeler out)!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
