Patience at Busy Public Boat Landings

Recommended Posts

Sorry about your experience at the landing!  Don't let one impatient person ruin your day at the landing.  I am use to the zoo at a landing so I have become really tolerable of many when watching what goes on at the landing.  You had done all you could do to make it as smooth and quick of a process as possible and that is all anyone can ask.  If a person is having troubles at the landing I have found it better to offer a helping hand rather than be impatient and get all huffy puffy about things as that doesn't change the situation at all.  There are instances that still annoy me at a landing but a person doing what they can but just happen to have to do it all (back trailer and land boat) I never have issues with as  one person can only do so much.  Hope that one person doesn't change your girlfriends mind about getting out on the lake!!

No doubt, I hope this doesn't discourage your girlfriend.  Unfortunately, everyone is in such a hurry all the time, look at the speed on our roads.  I try to help other whenever it is appropriate, and leave myself time if things get hectic at the landing or I, myself have issues loading the boat.  I just try to ignore the impatient.

Hope your next trip is even better than your last.

If someone is doing things in a competent way whether by themselves or in tandem I have no problems waiting.  Broken or damaged boat/trailer again, no problem.  Start loading or unloading coolers, clothes, etc....unstrapping or other things best done in the parking lot and yes you are now wasting my time.  I make sure my boat is set up for efficiency at the landing as I will never be that guy.

I am biased as this summer I watched that guy landing his new bass boat with his new crew cab 2500 diesel.  Based on the parking arrangements and to be polite to the guys waiting behind me I parked next to that guy.  I knew it was a mistake but it was more important to me to not leave the last parking place at the landing next to that guy as it would make the angles difficult for the guys behind me.  After watching that guy race around the lake driving his boat with the motor trimmed up way to much I returned to the landing to find that he hit my trailer with his truck.

So keep in mind not all of these less than competent people at the landing are harmless.

sometimes a little help when an old goat "me" to land a boat is helpful when its somes hard to be in two places at one time. really does make it faster for all concerned when its windy.

I spent 4 hours at the PA, helping the lake assoc. do AIS monitoring, on our lake for the walleye opener of 2015. We had almost 30 units in about 3-3.5 hours. There was a few impatient people but everyone kept their cool. What surprised me the most was the number of trailers going either up or down the ramp without the safety chain being hooked up. There was also few who  forgot to put the plug in. Both I attribute to them being in a hurry/alone and/or at least 1 member of the group being uncomfortable with the situation. Im of the "lend a hand mindset" rather than sit & watch while getting PO'ed

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.

I don't know, this save the plant thing looks like a money maker, for someone! 🫤 Where do you think electric prices are going to go when they have the monopoly for everything that moves! 🙄

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?
