Hey, I'm heading up to Ely over the 4th of July and plan on fishing Shagawa for some walleye.

I've fished it a number of times in the winter and done pretty well. Is the summer bite typically okay?

I'm certainly not a great walleye fisherman but have caught walleyes on Shags in July.  This time of year my walleye tackle for Shags would be a half pound of leeches and a slip bobber rig set at about 10 feet.

Oh, and a way of talking my wife out of being at the cabin for dinner...

Thanks, Wanderer.

I'll probably bring a boatload of tackle and try different tactics. I wouldn't mind getting into some nice smallies either. Have you ever fished Sandy Point? That's where I've had most of my luck during the winter months.

I'll most likely try that spot and then target some of the island areas too.

I have, with mixed results, but never in the winter.  I think I've only tried Shags once in the winter.

Always let the wind tell you where to fish.  It doesn't have to be blasting in but some is usually better than none...

My wife and I were fishing on Shagawa a couple weeks ago. We caught many fish in Longstorff bay,  in the area where there is a bigger and a smaller island next to each other with a hazard bouy west of them. We got them in 6 to 20 feet. My wife used crawlers and leeches on a lindy and I casted using a zoom tiny fluke on an 1/8th oz jig. I caught more walleye, She got the bigger walleyes and more smallies. The lake is full of 8 to 12" walleye, we caught at least 150 of them. Did well by the windsock over by the seaplane area also.
