Heading up for a 2 week trip into the Northwest Angle.  We will be fishing both sides of the border mainly for walleye.  I always debate every year on bringing up gear to fish Lake Trout.  I've got downriggers and gear for fishing Salmon since I've done that on Lake Michigan.  The sense I get is I wouldn't need the downriggers and could vertically jig them.  My question is what is the closest place coming out of the Northwest Angle to fish Lake Trout up on the Canadian side?  I know people make the run up and fish Lake trout but just not sure what area they are running to in the boats.  Any other specific information would be greatly appreciated.  Just think it would be a blast to give this a try and also get to explore more of the lake.

Thanks, Ryan

I'm a little surprised no one with more NW Angle experience answered this.  My lake trout experience is limited to a trip to Whitefish Bay by trailer, putting in at Sioux Narrows, so take from it what you will.  The part that probably would interest you is that we fished in 90-120 feet of water, and jigged.  Knowing that lake trout prefer deep, cool water - I'd look for similar areas to start out.  There aren't many close to the border area with the kind of depth Whitefish Bay has (north of Cyclone Island, NE end of Birch Island).

I am not surprised.  Seems most posts in the LOTW topic are from Resorts and the tourism folks.

Hines - The Angle resorts and outfitters will have the most current fishing and catching information and reports.  Good luck.

Hi Ryan: I have fished for Lakers on Crow Lake which on the other side of the road next to Sabasong Bay LOTW. I use to say at Halverson's Resort on Crow.. As for fishing the CA side of the angle, try Monument Bay and north of there in Lazar Bay, Outer Bay and Portage Bay too.  It was several years ago when Sandy's Monument Bay Resort was in operation.. Great Crappy in Lazar too.. I sold our place last year and now I'm longing to get up there again.. Take care Dick
