i'd call ahead if you know someone on sand. reports are hit and miss. the small lakes I hears have water and slush and some only 10 inches of ice. they are driving on bowstring  not sure on sand. could even call the bait shops in deer river, they may know.

Only vehicle I seen on the lake was a small(S10) pickup, everything else was a atv & snowmobile.We came home on the 28th & atv travel was getting harder because of all the slush. Last time out, the 26th, we only measured 10-11 inches of good ice with 6-8" of snow on top of that. At least 2" of honeycoombed ice & about as much slush in between. When we were up the conditions on Bowstring were much better.
