Well, home we go, but don't worry we didn't put a dent in the fish population at Vermilion! Had a great time trying to catch fish - for those of you who tried to help, thanks again. We will be back.  Had a great time snowmobiling and winning some $ at the casino!

Happy new year to you all and I will check every so often to see the pics of your great catches this season!

Be safe!

It's not very often I get to fish vermilion on the ice. I gave it a solid shot today. I iced my first four vermilion eyes ever. 1 nice 14" and 3 doinkers. Stayed pretty close to the cabin on big bay as all the kids took turns walking out and giving it a shot. Hoping to explore a little more tomorrow. Judging by some reports maybe I should just set up in the same place again though. About the only useful Info I  can give is 3 of the 4 fish came on an orange moon glow with a fat head.

I believe I saw you today based on your report. We were on two Yamaha snowmobiles around 4 o'clock and stopped to talk to what I'm assuming was you. You had the kids driving around on smowmoniles and were packing up when we stopped by. We fished near comet Island for an hour or so after dark and didnt catch anything worth keeping. . 22-28 ft of water.  Marked a few other ones but wouldn't commit. Around 6 inches of ice by comet. We plan on heading farther east past McKinley tomorrow. Good luck if you give it another shot tomorrow.

Gary I think I passed you the last two days yesterday I was riding with my boy on the trail and today I was waiting for a friend to go out at the McKinley landing. I've got a silver Polaris.

Casey - I remember seeing you on the trail with your boy.  Were you also at the boat landing with a power auger mounted on the front of your sled?  Glad to see you are doing well enough to get out on the sled.  Stop by if you see me on the lake (with my old beat up Polaris).

Hey Reid yes that was me. I think I saw your sleds a minute ago lol. We are at the bottom of birch wood lane. Is that you at the new cabin on the way down the hill?

Funny! Yup that is our place. We will be heading out for to try the afternoon bite soon.

Tough day for us. Moved a few times.(7-10 inches of ice  all over big bay for us) Didn't catch anything until the last spot at around 345. It was east of McKinley and we fished at 27ft of water. We also lost many fish at the hole somehow, Don't know how! About the only positive was this nice 26.5 inch walleye I caught.

That is a nice fish.  I am going to be fishing out of McKinley tomorrow and bring my wheeler.  I have family in Biawabik and fish the V in the summer but never ice fished.  Any suggestions as to what to look for?   Obviously no hot spots  but if I head toward Ely island are any mid lake humps or just shoreline breaks?   I am bringing bringing my 6 year old so it will be more riding than fishing but will fish later in the afternoon.   Thank you all for the reports.

This was only my 3rd time Ice fishing vermilion so I'm not an expert on this.we went to a well known fall walleye spot for us and it payed off (we were the only fishermen in sight). 24-28ft are the depths that we had the most action. We caught our fish on a buckshot jig and Minnow head. It was a very light bite today. My best advice would be to fish one of your favorite summer or fall  time reefs and fish the depths I mentioned (you'll have it all to your self). or there are some houses you'll see as you head out of McKinley. I'm assuming they are catching a few fish in that area. Good luck and be safe!

As Reid said, try you fall spots! 24-29 foot depths, close to rocks is also good.

Great fish Reid!

I did well yesterday morning also. 27 feet.

Iced 7 walleyes and kept 4 between 14" and 16". 7:30am to 10:00am was the best bite time where I was.

Yummy supper last night!!:D

Fished out of McKinley today. Started about noon a few hundred yards east of the shanty village @28'. Fished for about an hour while cooking lunch, didn't see a thing. Moved a mile and a half east and found a hole at 27' and fished til dark. Marked several fish, they mostly just looked and moved on. Tried a rattle flutter with whole minnow. They'd come in an suck on the tail. They wanted nothing to do with minnow heads. Guess see some is better than seeing nothing. This was my first time on vermillion, I think I will be back.

Thinking of heading up in the morning. Is it safe for snowmobile travel out of McKinley?

Plenty of ice out of McKinley for snowmobiles.

Day two out of McKinley park for my crew. I marked a fare number of fish Saturday but could not make them pull the trigger. Hoping my luck will change. Nice meeting you yesterday Cliff hopefully we can spend some time together on the ice today.  Looking forward to my next trip up!!  Landing some eyes would be great as well. 9 inches of good ice were I'm located.

Take care,

Tom (BD110)

Tom,

Good to meet you also!

I will not make it out today.

Guys fishing my house and close by in portables did well yesterday.

Had a flood around my wheel house a couple of days ago. Shut off all the heat and dug out the banking around the house. The last couple of days froze the mess up solid and I am good to go again as of yesterday!

Redrilled the holes and had a solid 12" of ice.

Got reports of up to 15" of ice also close by.

Probably safe to drive out now but I will wait until I see a few other brave souls do it first!

The cold front slowed the bite down some but still getting enough walleyes for a meal or two.

Small jigs with small minnows and set lines with medium sized chubs are still my best methods of icing walleyes.

Was up last two weekends on birch point.

Fished mainly moose island drop off and Banana reef with limited success.

Handful of keepers but threw most back... bobbers with pink glow jigs did best in the mid morning hours with slow afternoons.  Marking a lot of fish with about a 50% mark to bite ratio.

Making another trip this weekend and thinking about heading out to potato to see what the action is like out that way!

I will be up again for the weekend and plan to hit the lake for a full day.  Any tips on what depth to concentrate on?  I am going to freeze my arse off getting out but it beats sitting at home.  Also, I am new to the ATV world so with the cold temps, should I be worried about the battery not being able to start the machine in these conditions?

Posted

djlong,

I have a brand new ATV and it refused to start on the lake in the below weather that we just went through!

Carry a set of jumper cables so you can flag someone down or be sure to start the machine every hour and let it run for about 10 minutes. I let my machine run all afternoon on Sat.!

Good bite again today after the warm up last night!

Iced 6 walleyes by 1:00pm and kept 4 15-1/2" to 17" fish.

27' to 30' depths close to rocks. small crappie minnows on small jigs or a medium sized chub on a set line works best.

No real set time for best bite today. The bite was slow and scattered out all day. The ones that did bite were much more aggressive then they were this week end.

Anybody driving vehicles out on vermilion yet?

I agree with Cliff. My 2014 wheeler with 150miles on it stranded me on the ice last sunday. Thanks again Cliff for saving my arse. It would have been a long walk, I probably would have turned into the first guy to drop his truck through the ice. I'm not going out again without jumper cables.

Don't new wheelers have pull starts also?

NO!

They are all fuel injected . If you have a dead battery you could pull all day and they would not start even if they did have a pull start! Need the battery to charge the fuel injector pump

Wow, I'm really out of touch with my 20 year old Polaris ATV and snowmobile.  Never thought of that.

Posted

Yes, my 2002 Arctic Cat 500 had a pull start. Could start it at anytime!

I just bought a Polaris 570 Fuel injection . I have a quick disconnect trickle charger on it. With the trickle charger I can plug one end in to quick connect and then clamp to  jumper battery . I would also like to  buy one of those jump start battery backs .  They make a small ones ,
The reason why is because like everyone says them ATV battery's are not very good in cold. Mine hesitates when its in cold garage . Polaris claims its got a cold weather battery you can purchase but I would feel safer with one of them battery packs.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.
