I was out on East Sunday solid 8 inches fishing was slow. Saw a truck on the lake Tuesday

Posted

I was out on west last Saturday. It was a Zoo! Quite a few sleds and wheelers out there too. Fish were finicky but we got a couple.

Posted

Thanks for the reports. Have a cabin on East side of West rush. Planning on bringing the wheeler to make a hockey rink on sat. Sounds like I should be able to hit my spots in perfect timing for the pressure change when the front moves in.

How much snow is on the lake? Heading out there tomorrow.

Posted

I was out Friday, and I would guess about 6" of snow, and 6-8" of ice.  There was a lot of water, slush where we were fishing, but I am sure that has changed by now.

Warning: the hill going down to the landing on west Rush is a skating rink. Be careful going up and make sure you look before you go down.  Think there might have been a little accident Saturday evening. Ice was pretty solid, measured 8" on one spot. Was making a lot that's for sure.

Fishing was slow, really had to work them. Deep hole provided action. Nowhere else did. A mix of minnows and plastics. Didn't seem to prefer as long as you switched up.

I put a house out on West Rush every year and I'm heading up this weekend to find some fish and a good spot for the house. I'd like to get an update on ice conditions now after these sub-zero temps. Thanks in advance. I will report back after I get out with ice conditions and a fishing report.

Good luck,
-Zander

I'm heading out to West Rush in the morning. I'll update what I find when I get back in the afternoon.

Update drscholl14?

Posted

I am waiting too.  I heard there is a consistent 10 inches but would like several sources.

Posted

I'll be out there next weekend to pull my house. Talked to a buddy on the lake and as of today he was finding a consistent 11"-11 1/2".

Good luck,

-Zander

Sorry I didn't make it up there.  A little under an hour away from me and the guy I was going with kid got sick, and I ended up being lazy and fishing a local lake.  Sorry I can't help with a report.

Has anyone been out recently who can provide an ice report or if people are driving out?

Thank you in advance.

Posted

I was not there but my FIL was out there last Wednesday.  He said there were a lot of trucks out there and the ice was a decent 12 inches.  He drove out in his two wheel drive truck and made it back!:D

Great news!  Thank you.

Has anyone been there and actually measured in several spots. Rush point store fb is reporting much different results. Sound like anywhere from 8 to 15 inches. People driving all over. Want to bring the castle with on sat but do not want to find an 8 spot

Posted

The ice is goofy this year.  I personally would not feel safe in a castle on most lakes this year.  It is not worth it in my honest opinion.  I would say if you are asking and worried about ice thickness then don't bring the castle.

Posted

Yea it's sketchy at best. Have a cabin there and only fished once there. Might see if I can get the castle out with a wheeler

Posted

Ice was 14" or so on West Rush in the hole off the West Landing.  Only measured in a couple of places close together.  I did take my wheeler but there were many full size trucks in the area.

Posted

That's better! Im still debating it. Maybe I'll walk out of the access we will use and check holes on the way out. Also thinking east out of flickabirds. I think they have much better ice

Posted

Still some sketchy spots on East too.  If you stay on the road out of Flickabirds to the normal community spots you'll be fine with 14+ inches, but if you get off the road there are spots with 10, and even found a spot with 8.  Had a guy with his truck trailer and 20 ft house next to us....we were sitting on 10 inches.  Kinda surprised nobody took the plunge last weeekend, it was a zoo out there, people driving everywhere.

Posted

Thanks for the info. With the warm temps and the idiots driving too I bet something with be in the drink. I want to fish rush somewhere but might go to mille lacs instead where they had 19+ last weekend

Posted

I was up on West Rush on Saturday evening and found 11-12 inches everywhere I drilled.  I punched probably 30 holes.

Any new ice reports after this little cold snap? Heading up tomorrow with the wheelhouse after work as would like to get away from the craziness of cigar area. Preferably down by crane or in the bay. How is travel on the lake? Any snow? Thanks for any info

Went out of flickabirds today Fishing for pike on the weed lines in 6-12 fow. Pulled in 4 on the day biggest was 38 incher! Snapped a picture and put it back. Drove all over in 1/2 ton truck, measured 14-16 inches where I was at. Seen 3/4 or 1 ton pulling bigger house out in middle near rest of houses.

Nice gator! I've never ice fished east. Thought about trying it a few times. Is there any night bite as we won't be there until 7ish? Does flickabirds charge for a road pass?

Posted

I think there is a night bite, when we where leaving at dark last night there where plenty of people just coming out into all the houses in the middle. I've only fished pike on east so not 100% sure. And there was a $5 fee to get on from flickabirds. Heres that gator, just shy of 15lbs! Can't get it to post straight up and down.

That's a nice one! Hmmmm..trying to decide between east or west still. I really want to try east, but going up with some buddies and want them to for sure catch some fish. I'll flip a coin and see what happens

Any updates on West Rush?  Ice thickness and driving conditions?  Planning on heading out tomorrow.  Thanks.

Went to Mille Lacs with my dad and ended up with 17 perch and one tullipee. That was on Sunday we fished hard and I burned through 3 9 amp batteries I would say about 25 holes per battery through 32-36 inches of ice.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.
