I just looked at the 10 day \

As long as it doesn't snow any great amounts and I didn't see that

they could make it .......14 days

I do agree with leech though not sure why the why they don't back it up

but on the other hand they have always pulled it off except the one year to round

to bad it wasn't this week-end with game it would probably get alittle free press like yrs ago when Madden

came up here

New Press Release from the Jaycees says that they have been talking with the Sheriff Dept and monitoring ice conditions.  With the forecast, the assumption is that there will be enough ice and everyone should keep plans for the 23rd.

I wish them luck, I know it will cost them alot of money if it doesn't happen, and alot more if they wait till the last minute to decide.

On a nearby lake it made about 3" of ice between Thursday evening and Sunday morning.  I would estimate about 3" of snow on the ice.  It was -19 yesterday morning when I left, and it looks like it was pretty close to that this morning.

Just to Qualify, this is my 26th year with this event and dealing with the ice on Gull Lake.  We made a solid 4" of ice since Friday.  With the current forecast I have no doubt that everything will go off as planned on the 23rd.  All the coffee talk is both a positive and a negative but if you are one of those who doesn't spend a lot of time on the ice or has payed attention to the past, please refrain, FISH ON!

This is a real bummer but hopefully everyone understands.  While the ice making pattern was looking good for the contest site, Sheriff Dahl's primary concern was the huge increase of traffic and villages all around the lake and people not using common sense.>>Maybe it can be turned into the worlds largest superbowl tailgating party on the 6th?

Superbowl Tailgating Ice Fishing party does sounds pretty sweet!

Too bad it wasn't the 23rd I am getting excited to be out there again but oh well I will be there on the 6th!

See everyone on the 6th!!

Common scence isn't always commen these days

......  Better to postpone than have a sitiuation that you cannot recover from......The smart thing to do would be reschdual for later  in the year and avoid the conflict. Again its a commen scennce thing.......

I agree wih Todd not sure why they don't just move it to the last week of the season

in Feb ...it seems every other year or so they are sweating the ice

if you did move to feb you would have a way better chance of ice every year no problem

chances of a decent day out there go up hence way bigger crowds

25-40 degrees will sell more tickets than maybe a day in the 20's if you are lucky

I fished it 17 yrs in row and don't remember to many times being comfortable out there

I think its a great contest and very good for every body involved but maybe it could be bigger and better

just a thought

Postponing was the right call.  I drove on a smaller lake in Baxter last night and was surprised to only see 11 inches . . this lake was frozen a month before Gull.

If they permanently move the date for future events, they need to consider other fishing tourney's that may draw from it  (Eeelpput fest, DU touney on Mille Lacs, Alexandria ice fishing tourney).  Id imagine the planners for all these big events probably coordinate with each other, but I could be wrong?

Posted

ya good point the eelpout would be the big one there

I think that du is after the season any way

thing is gull is like the last lake to freeze could probably swap with the alex

I dunno I guess they know what their doing they have pulled it off for 25 yrs now...lol

just thinking out loud I guess

DU tournament is always the last Saturday of the season. So stay away jaycees don't get any ideas from these clowns

There are so many variables with moving the contest date.  Many other smaller community events around the state would have to adapt or suffer.  Major sponsors who support many events would have to make choices and smaller events would suffer.  Also it's nice to spread out the larger events statewide so people can make it to a couple rather than choose between.  All these organizers are sensitive to this.  Don't forget the original goal for the Extravaganza was to create a tourism draw and economic impact in the Brainerd Area.  Jan is one of the slowest months of the year for hotels, restaurants, gas stations etc.  This area is filled with out of towners spending money in Feb.  Hockey tournaments, good snowmobile conditions and other smaller contests around the area.  Jan is still the best way to accommodate this goal.

Just came off the lake with the JC's and Sheriff Dept.  The permit was granted and everything is set for Feb 6th.  Best of luck to everyone who will be out there.  Don't forget to bring the kids out for the Youth Ice Olympics.

Did you get anything for 52nd place ? Just curious

It sounded like a great contest, nice weather (best ever?), especially fish wise this year.

I can't remember any year that needed a 1+lb fish to even sniff the leaderboard.  Congrats to all.

Guy in our group popped a nice eye right away and ended with a nice prize.  We had tullibees before the contest started and they disappeared when it was game time.

Good for you.  I couldn't get the Tulies to go.  I had them chasing me up and down, but never got one to commit.

our group didnt get any  this year, we usually target the 'bees but they were not showing up as thick as normal years by us; we would get them to come in every once in awhile but wouldnt commit. we fished the SW end of the contest

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters still in full swing offering both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite in February has been excellent, with lots of fish being caught and plenty of opportunities for fresh fish fries. Some ice roads are now extending over 20 miles out, keeping anglers on productive schools of walleyes and saugers. Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best late-season ice years in recent memory. If you’re fishing on your own, bring an auger extension, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure. As always, expect to sort through some smaller fish, but that’s a good sign of a healthy fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of time to plan your trip. Pike fishing never closes, and with the thick ice conditions, this year is shaping up to be fantastic for targeting trophy pike. March: The Go-To Month for Trophy Pike March is prime time for big northern pike, as these aggressive predators begin staging for the upcoming spawn. Lake of the Woods is loaded with pike over 40 inches, and tip-up fishing can be lights out this time of year. Anglers targeting pike should set baits under tip-ups in shallow water (6-15 feet) near pre-spawn areas, weedy areas, river mouths, or back bays. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even some crappies are in the mix. Suspended walleyes are showing up—watch electronics closely. Plenty of limits are being caught, with many anglers taking home bonus perch this season. Best Techniques: Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head continue to be the top producer. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well for aggressive fish. Lures with built-in lights have been very effective in the stained water (Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure, not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, continues to catch neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best; other days, the afternoon bite turns on. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and watching electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the best times for targeting walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head remains the go-to presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some giants being iced (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release). Safety Note: Ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, but they can change rapidly due to current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent throughout the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts are moving fish houses regularly, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies continue to be caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed overnight through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Pike season never closes—March is prime time for trophies!  Perch and crappie seasons open year-round Whether you’re looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, or comfortable lodging at a resort with or without a meal plan, there’s still time to plan your late-season ice fishing adventure.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.
