Cold weather is coming Thursday with single digits on the horizon!  The lake and river are still open.  Fishing had been excellent on the lake.  Anglers no longer fishing the lake by boat as some ice chunks are showing up blocking navigation but the river is still HOT!  Good news is there is a pile of fish just off of Pine Island and in other parts of the basin.  The bays have 2-5 inches of ice.

On the Rainy River, excellent fishing in open water continues.  Some anglers reporting big fish and big numbers.  Anchor up with a jig and minnow.  Evenings best overall but fish being caught all day.

Up at the NW Angle, ice is 6-8 inches on the inlet, 2-6 inches adjacent Young's Bay.  Some resorts will start to fish this Friday, but not their normal spots until ice thickens.  It won't be long, but safety first. Work through resorts as they have the best handle on ice conditions.

So how soon do you think before the resorts will be able to get their houses out to their normal spots? How thick does the ice need to be for them to get to their normal spots? Thanks!

You will need to contact the resort you are going through specifically.  Each one might vary by a day or 3 depending on their equipment.  Also location has a lot to do with it whether it is out of 4-Mile Bay, Zipple Bay, Long Point or Rocky Pt.  Once there is a couple of inches on the entire lake, it is easier to predict.  Right now it is still based on weather/wind etc.  It changes daily.

Lets hope it holds.

The wind over the next 5 days will certainly test the strength of the ice.  I can not wait until the week after Christmas!!!

The Promise of Ice might be a MYTH , I just looked at the extended forecast for the Twin Cities. The first below zero temp at night is predicted for Saturday January 16th , Daytime highs until that point are still expected to be mid to upper thirties. Guess I will hope for cold weather to the North and do a lot of driving this winter.

When do you guys think a guy will be able to go out of wheelers point and fish across pine island?

When the ice is thick enough to hold up to the wind and wheelers ;)

I will be up New Year's day and the weekend, really hoping the ice can continue to build!
