Since the dog days are here not seeing many posts.  This is a great resource and palce to communicate so lets use it.  Back to Breezy Point and  Detroit Lakes starting August 28th.  Best to all!

Sorry guys I know I should be posting more just got burnt out so taking the summer off and plan on getting back into posting this fall and winter again  Crappie bite has been unbelievable in the DL area right from the early ice out through now. At this point been getting them in the normal summer spots in the cabbage at anywhere from 10-15' depending on the lake.  Buddies that fish for eyes have been having a good season as well.  See ya soon!

Agreed, the fishing has been just awesome this summer. Panfish can be caught along the weedlines, pretty much any time of the day. Guys pulling spinners/crawlers are still catching a bunch of eyes. some of the lakes have a pretty good algea bloom but nothing you can;t fish around or through.

Fished Big Cormorant for a day and the bass bite was hit or miss.  Found a few fish on the docks and a cluster of nicer fish near a rocky point. Switched lakes on Friday and got into a great dock bite.  Nothing huge (17.5 was the biggest) but great numbers of fish. They were hitting jigs, tubes and senkos very aggressively and didn't seem to mind that it was high noon and 98 degrees.  My first time to the DL area, but I hope to be back!

Juan- Thanks for the post.  Be in Detroit Lakes on Sept. 4th and will advise on how I do.  Great area with more lakes than a oerson can fish in a lifetime.

Took my son and his buddy from AZ out over the weekend and we found them on 2 different lakes close to DL. 9-15 ft in the cabbage jigging with chartreuse paddle tail minnows on a 16oz jig.  Pic of a couple.

Back to Mi from Detroit Lakes.  Fishing was slow for walleyes.  Did very well for bass and small pike on Franklin, Pickeral and Lake 5 trolling 1/4 oz jig with 3 inch twister tail over the weed in 12 ft of water.  Lots of fun.  No big fish but as said, fun.  Also fished the Breezy Point area north of Brainerd.  Slow there also, small pike, water was very warm.

I would imagine the bite is still hot for pretty much anything you want to target.  The fall Bass bite up there is the better than the spring.  Was up 2 weeks ago and did very well shallow and weed line throwing a chatterbait.  Couldnt keep the pike off either.

Out a couple of times last week.  The fishing was great for pike and bass.  We did get some eyes too.

Sorry for late update been in a combine for two and a half weeks.  Fished a small lake on the 26th.  Huge bull gills 9+" probably caught 20-30 that size 6-8" probably 50-75.  Caught a few crappies and if we did they were 10-11.5" maybe caught 75.  Took the girlfriend the next day with her nephew and couldn't catch a blue gill to save our lives.  we maybe ended up with 20 gills total but caught around a 100 crappies all in that 10-11.5" mark did get two at 12.5" and luckily they both caught them so they were excited.  Between both days we caught maybe 10 bass total and two of them were a whopping 3"!  Thought they had put a big fat head on till I heard them laughing at how big the bass was.  

What we found were that everything was near cabbage.  If you found cabbage standing they were there.  We had to downsize our jigs big time.  1/16 oz jigs with a small twister or grub body was best nothing over 2".  First day we actually switched to bobbers and were catching the gills on them with ice jigs with crawlers or minnows but sunday they wouldn't bite it to save our lives.

Glad to see ice fixed the problem with lack of posting on this site.  Tight lines and good bit to all.  This year we are in MN for 6 weeks, start at Thunderbird Lodge, then Detroit Lakes and last stop Breezy Point.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
