I've been looking to get into some back water and am eyeing Spring Lake. Is there much current in that water? Could I get around in a 12 foot Jon Boat and trolling motor on a calm day? Or better to say off the river completely until I have an outboard?

Thanks!

There's a canoe launch/shorefishing area on the north side of grey cloud island. If you can drag your boat down, it's pretty sheltered in that area. I've never fished it, but it sure looks nice down there. And I've been told that it can be good for spring time crappies and white bass.

You can definitely launch from the access on Hilliary Path with that set up. You will have to keep your eye on the wind and stay in spring lake and out of the main Mississippi channel without an out board. You can navigate up spring lake upstream along the shoreline to the head of it where you will find log jams islands and cuts out to the main river. We have caught just about everything that swims back in there except the muskie they stocked a few years ago. Remember you can only keep cats, panfish, pike and rough fish. Bass walleye are catch and release only. the cuts between the islands are a blast for smaller channel cats/multi specie fun.  If you cut straight from boat landing to the islands you will end up push poling or walking the boat over extensive sand flats.

Along the shoreline by the boat landing you will also catch anything from channels carp to some big sunnies and bass
