Spent the evening out on Forest, Lake's 1 and 3, and it was tough!!!!! Didn't even manage a bite.

Tried the weed edges and transition lines with nothing. Looks like the weed line is around 11-13 feet from everything I could find. My normal spots didn't produce anything.

Board is slow, anyone else out fishing on forest?

ECC,  It has been a pretty good start to the year out there for me as far as the fish go.  I haven't been out since last week as I was up north this past weekend.  The fish I was catching have been quite shallow in the 6-8' range.  There are a ton of 16-18" eyes and another big group of 21-24" eyes out there right now.  Have caught a few 8-12" fish as well which bodes well for the future.  Spoke with a group of anglers at the launch and they had a 6 fish limit caught in 6 fow using 1/16th flu flus and crappie minnows.  I have been using crankbaits with decent luck.  The fish are getting more aggressive as the water temps come up but this recent cold front kind of shut down the bite temporarily.  Should be good this week before the fronts roll through again.  Pike and bass are coming from the same areas and I have seen some large muskies sunning over the tops of the weeds.  Even had 2 muskies take swipes at walleyes on the stringer last week.  Should be a good year for skis out there!

The edges of the weedline in 6-8' and also into the deeper edges have been turning a mixed bag of walleyes, bass and pike on Forest this week.  The 12-15' range has also produced a mixed bag of fish as well.  I have heard from a few folks that jigs and minnows worked deeper or live bait rigs with jumbo leeches worked in the 17-22' range have produced some decent catches of walleyes during the day.  Muskies have been active shallow with a few fish following and hitting crank baits while fishing for bass and pike and on sunnier days they can be seen at times lounging along the tops of the weedbeds.  Crappies and gills are congregated along the edges and tops of the weedbeds and can often be seen surfacing right now.  Some decent perch in the 7-10" range are also being found along the weed edges and are actively hitting tube jigs and micro cranks.

I have a rare opportunity to get out during the day tomorrow for a bit, do you think I have a decent shot at a day bite on Forest (probably 3rd)? If it's more of an evening/sunset bite I might hit the river instead bur Forest is a lot closer to home, any insight is much appreciated, thanks!

The day bite has been solid for multispecies on Forest with some bigger fish early and late in the day but I have caught numerous fish from 9-12 as well and also 4-6 pm.  Third lake has some quality structure and you should be able to find some active fish.  I have a reliable report that 16-20' depths on third with jigs and minnows is putting some eyes in the boat as well as some of the shallower breaklines.  Good luck!

Worked the weed edges this am with cranks and found active pike, bass, rockbass, gills and crappies in the 8' range.  Had one muskie follow to boatside in 9' and took a half hearted swipe on the figure 8 and then moseyed back to the depths.  Found some larger bass in the 3-4 lb range today along with some smaller males.  The smaller males seemed to be out away from the weedline(possibly guarding beds?)  while the larger bass came right off the edges of the weedline amidst clumps of coontail.  Water temps are now in the low 70's.  Walleye action today was consistent in the 12-15' range working paddle tail minnows and deeper diving crankbaits.

Worked the weedlines on Weds evening with paddle tails and small crank baits and found a few active walleyes in 6-7'.  Small bass and pike were active as well as rockbass, gills and crappie.  My fishing partner for the evening caught a nice 14.5" crappie on a #5 shadrap.  The shallow bite was slower then I expected so I slid out into the 12-14' depths and found some larger bass, pike and walleye working wally divers along the edges.  Biggest eye of the night a nice 24" fish smoked a wallydiver while working the edge of a deeper weedline.  I am finding an abundance of rockbass in the lake this year and they are taking a variety of baits.  It appears to me that the fish have started to transition to the deeper edges of the weeds to escape the warmer water in the shallows.  No muskie sightings on the night but a great night to be on the water.

We were out last tuesday for multi-species. Fished for bass and muskies most - no bass, one follow from a low 40's muskie.

Last hour we tried walleyes off willow point, along with a few other boats. Caught a northern and cut off another. Didn't see other boats catch any. Water temp was right around 49-50. Learned a few late deep weed beds, so never a bad day on the water.

Just moved on the lake - FL. Posted quite a bit previously about what I've seen when we were just "close" to the lake. Looking forward to sharing now what I'm seeing as the benchmarks happen during the winter season. Have fun and be safe out there.

Saw some guys fishing the deeper hole to the west of Willow Point and a few other pop up tents in around the channel between 2 and 3... Any reports?? How thick is the ice.

Same report here, 5 inches on lake three, but not sure about the deeper basin. That usually freezes last in the 15+ feet of water and usually has less ice.

Caught a few eater pike in the afternoon. Beautiful day on the ice.

I was on two and pounded crappies. Nothing to be proud of since they were all 6-8 inches but nice to figure out a pattern. 5-7 inches out there and sleds buzzing around us all day. Not enough ice for me to be on a sled yet....

No slush where I was.

Wow, I was out there last weekend on lake 3 and had about 6-7 as well.  My guess is the ice is close to 10 inches if not more.  I'm sure any day they'll be driving on the lakes.  I'll wait til the bigger trucks get out there.  Can't say I'm not sick of walking out though.

Saw a full size truck w/plow last night on my sled ride on First lake, toward SW side. Anyone around that fella to report how much ice was in the area?

Friday there was 11 inches of ice on Forest in some spots I checked, but it was only 7 inches of ice as I went deeper, and the ice was getting less as I checked. With the cold Yesterday and Today we should in theory be adding a couple inches. Anyone been out yet Today with a report on the ice? I'd like to get my shack out deeper.

Remain chicken sh@%, don't be foolish. Truck and house needs 12" because somewhere between the access and your desired spot may be much less. -17 last night may have added an inch with the fluffy snow on top of the ice.

Checked the ice yesterday, measured 13" a couple hundred yards from shore near downtown, the same location had 9" about a week ago.  Starting to see a few vehicles out there including some 1/2 ton trucks.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
