That is mind boggling, to say the least. I'd wager these "sportsmen" thought they were going out of their way, and utilizing valuable travel time to make the stop and dump their mess. I'd guess in their way of thinking they could have been slobs and dumped it on the lake.

 There are no easy answers, and I think the situation is getting worse, not better.

Mille Lacs is a pig sty every spring, and it's been that way forever. It's pretty sad when the local Boy scout troop has a spring clean up at Father Hennepin State Park, and it's all drift in lake garbage, virtually a dump truck full.

Spot these slobs, and make the right call.

Dumping the holding tanks on the side of the road...I guess I never thought of that one.  Doesn't surprise me one bit though.

I guess I never understood how dealing with taking a dump (responsibly) is such a problem.  We line one bucket (marked Snickers Milky Way, etc) with a 10 gallon garbage bag.  Each time nature calls we throw two grocery bags inside of there and tie them both up when you get done.  If things get really out of control we get rid of the garbage bag liner, too.  The whole works goes into a 25-30 gallon metal garbage can I keep outside which has a 50 gallon garbage bag liner.  If it's cold like this last weekend, everything is frozen in a matter of minutes.  At the end to the weekend you tie up the 50 gallon garbage bag and drop it in the nearest dumpster.  If there isn't a dumpster I just take it home.  

FYI I didn't see a dumpster at JR's this weekend.  That doesn't mean there isn't one, we just couldn't find it.  If there isn't one, there should be, as there should be at all access points.  With the number of road passes, it wouldn't even be a drop in the bucket (no pun intended).

I see on Roger's facebook page that they had 17 dumpster loads hauled away so they are doing their part. I heard that Westwinds dumpsters were full and the compacter at Hillman's was full so Westwind hauled all the way to the transfer station at Blackduck.  That is just 2 roads out of 11 so a person can see just how much garbage and human waste is being generated on the lake.

Those pictures look like the norht shore. Why would one bring a wheelhouse that way when they can't get out. Sad if they drive down that road to do all that I hope someone catches them. Or if we see them doing call and turn them in.

Beltrami County Road 111 just south of the Sunny Beach Road.. I would assume someone moving between the East and South shores.

Again, this just ticks me off... that people are doing this.... they call themselves  sportsman? When I am up in the area... and if I ever see waste coming out of someones Wheelhouse.... Trust me I am going to be your worst nightmare... and please if anyone else catches this... please do something about it. Its sad Kelly-P needs to drive around and see this crap. FYI: what did I say about JR awhile back? people should boycott this outfit. Until they see different results from him. I HOPE YOU SEE THIS JR!

Perhaps we could print off some of these horrifying pictures and get some of the prominent access points/bait shops in the area to post the images in their stores with a message like "We reserve the right to refuse service to those who do not treat our natural resources with respect". Informing the true sportsman of the problem may lead to better reporting of litter bugs. Those few bad eggs may choose to clean up after themselves better knowing people care and are looking for them.

The Lake Assc. has been able to find some funding for signs to be put up and flyers handed out asking people to dispose of their garbage/waste properly. A little late for this year but it took some time to find the funding.

Last week we had 17 dumpsters of trash picked up. This week we started checking tags and we had to stop guys from Greater Minnesota Rental from dumping their garbage at our location several times. It turns out they charge $5 to dump at their location and garbage is not included in their access fee as they were turned away from using their facility. It's outfits like this that create garbage all over the lake. We will be contacting the MPCA and the county regarding their business practices with garbage. Every business should have their own dumpster and access fees should cover guest trash. Unfortunately this won't change unless guest demand change.

I only go out on Hillman's or Beacons and both those roads look pretty clean. They were clean last year also. I have always felt that roads take on personalities from how they are run and what is considered acceptable behavior on that road. Last year one guy decided to leave his garbage behind  but before he got to the highway he was chased down and his garbage was placed on the hood of his truck. That had to be an embarrassing moment.

  I think the authorities have a pretty good idea where most of the garbage came from last winter and are keeping a close eye on those areas of the lake.

It is late in the season but the flyers and signs arrived today and seeing as Patsy was gone I got them delivered to the roads so they would have them for this weekend to hand out. Beacon's put their sign up immediately, Westwind started stapling the flyers to the road pass's right away and  I see that Rogers has already posted the flyer on their Facebook page. I lifted the photo of the flyer from Roger's page. As anybody that has followed this forum for a few years knows I have had my differences with Portavilla/Roger's. Well, as far as I can see the past few years Roger's has treated their neighbors with respect, they have treated other business on the Lake with respect and they have treated the Lake with respect. Consequently they have earned my respect and in my opinion they are a good and valuable part of the URL community.

Great idea. If there was a way to make sure the money collected went to the clean up efforts many people would not mind a increase in fact some like me would donate. 

Here in the Mankato area I can't drag the house 20 yards without picking up something. Cigarette lighters, snuff tins, pop bottles bags you name it. 

Keep up the good work and for those who clean up after others as you fish your work may go unnoticed but that is a good thing !

We were up over the weekend. Put chains on to get further off the beaten path. I could see from where we parked someone had been parked 100 yrds away, and left some of their beer cans/bottles. We picked up their litter, and another slobs garbage as we were about to get back on the main ice road. We stoped to take chains off, there layed a few more beer cans. It kind of remines me of the early 70's when people would regularly throw their garbage out the window driving down the road. Then we could pick it up befor we bailed it, so we didn't feed it to the cattle. I guess some people think that lakes are one big ditch!

I was tempted to drive around the lake Saturday and get a road pass from each road to see who had dumpsters available for the fishermen. It looks to me like most of the roads are trying really hard to keep it clean but a couple of roads are not making much of an effort.

I just have to chime in. This year I have found 3 bags of fish guts on the lake. The last one was just a couple days ago. I wish he would of told me where they caught all the fish and I would of gladly taken there fish guts and disposed of them. In my opinion all the outfitters need to have there own dumpsters from here on out. You can get a dumpster from waste management seasonal. They will drop it off and pick it up.   I'm not sure what Rodgers would do as they have a few outfitters out there and 7 or 8 dumpsters might not be there answer . Any outfits running a road should be checked  asap and demand that they have a dumpster on site period. I have picked up my share of liter all ready this year. some things just blow away in the wind but bags of fish guts are thrown in a snow bank. Bottle and beer cans do not blow away and are thrown out.  granted I have only picked up two beer bottles and 10 cans or so but in my eyes that to much. I'm very busy out there and I try and stop when I see something on the ice road or something that looks funny. Sometimes it may take a day or two. It just flabbergast me that 100 trucks can drive by a beer can on the ice road and not stop and pick it up. As I said I will stop  and get it at some point but come on.

Well,,,,overall it appears the lake was left cleaner then last year. That is good but 2 serious issues have come up.

#1  A large number of bags of human waste have been found. These bags are not only bags being found just one here or there but also numerous bags in one place. It appears that that someone opened places in the road banks and placed numerous bags of human waste there and then covered them up with snow. Where numerous bags are being found in one place the bags are all dark colored. The CO's are working on it to not only to try clean it up but to find evidence linking it to the people that did it. If anyone saw anything concerning someone burying dark colored bags in the road banks please call the T.I.P. line 1-800-652-9093.

#2 Many complaints about RV model fish houses dumping their holding tanks of human waste on roads, in parking lots, private driveways and wayside rests to name a few of the places.

The end result is that next winter we can expect greatly increased law enforcement both on the Lake but also the roads ON LAND around the Lake.

Too bad we can't find out who's the culprits are & take it & DUMP it in they're yard  Sad to say but I've even seen incident # 2 down here in the Winnie area along Hwy 46

I found the same thing last year and made a phone call. I would  assume it got picked up. I  have only found one bag of human waste so far this year. I did find 3 bags of fish guts though.

I Know its early but Im not seeing a lot of trash on the south shore this spring. If it means anything i want to compliment Rogers Resort for the time and money they spent removing trash. I think the Upper Red Associations making people aware of the problem helped.

I see a log on the shore that looks like it might be off a crappie crib. I wonder how the cribs are holding up. That was quite a project.

The CO's figured out who left these bags of human waste on the lake.  The people that left the bags of human waste on the lake then came back up to URL and cleaned up their mess to the CO's satisfaction to avoid charges.  For most of the winter there were CO's undercover watching to see if fishermen packed up and left garbage on the lake. The fishermen that left garbage on the lake were then stopped by another CO before they got off the lake and were given the choice of charges or go back and clean up their garbage.

I was also impressed on how hard Roger's worked to keep the lake clean. From everything I have heard Roger's respected other business's on the lake and the customers of other business's. Roger's has earned my respect.

I often look back at that project and wonder how we did it. The months of time people worked for free to get it done. For a community that was so broke it couldn't afford to pay attention we did pretty good.

Good to hear kelly-p. I hope the word gets around & that nonsense stops. I find a little of the same here & this lake is 1/10 the size of what's fished on URL. Probably sees only 1 % of the pressure

I am glad to read that things improved this year over last.  It is good to hear that the COs were made aware of an issue and, along with the area businesses, took steps to correct it.
